Be sure your turbo hoses are all the way connected. If one has a leak it could sound like what you describe. And usally a slight loss in power because of the boost you are loosing.
You do know you have a turbo don't you? They sound like jet engines.
Same thought I had until I read the part about cresting the hill.....so I went for the screaming fan on this one. My first answer was Mother-in-law.....usually the whine is constant in a situation like that...

Quick question. I was pulling our trailer through the mtns this past weekend, I too heard what I assumed was the fan, based on what I've read on FTE before. But I noticed it seemed to get loader if I pushed the throttle. Is the fan variable with engine RPM? In other words, when there is a need for fan cooling, does the speed of the fan vary with how "hard" the engine is working or is it just a simple on or off?
thanks
the fan speed varies with engine temperature(actually runs with P/s fluid) technical name is hiscotronic. turbo sound will be higher pitched, also changes, only with engine load and speed.
My 5.4 dosent' make a sound and runs all the time? Shouldn't it be disengaged when it's 0 degrees out? I would love for my fan to make the tractor trailer fan sound!
