For The Guys On The Fence about HPX

Just thought I would share my results with my SS HPX line. After a busy Friday of packing to go the coast, I managed to get my muffler removed and my SS HPX installed. Just a little tougher to do than I had planned. Knees and elbows sore for days. As I posted on another thread, I was disappointed in the results for a while. After 50-60 miles I noticed it was quiter when sitting at lights and slow traffic. Now after my trip is over and 1400 miles have passed and things are more normal now, I am really impressed how much quiter my engine is at start up. I know that it is warmer now and that could be part of it, but I can crank it after sitting for more than 12hrs and it sounds like it has been running all day. The muffler delete on my 4in exhaust is super. My wife even likes it better than when I had the muffler. It is louder by far, but now I don't hear that metalic resonating sound that was there with the muffler. Now that I am sounding good and smooth I need to fix my little bump up while at the coast.

Then it will look as good as it sounds.

A year ago I started doing small engine mods and worked my way up. I did the in-tank Hutch mod, pre-pump fuel line mods, and the HPX. I've worked my way up to bigger, more expensive, and more impressive mods. The added power and intake/exhaust noise are too much fun!

But yesterday, I realized that those weren't the most impressive things about the character change in my truck since I bought it.

A friend just bought a '99 7.3 that is completely stock. As I rode in it, I was surprised by the injector clatter. At times, it sounded like something alive trying to hammer its way out of the engine.

I remembered my wife asking "Is it supposed to sound like that?" after I bought my truck.

The little things all put together - fuel pick-up mods, HPX, fuel additive, (real) synthetic diesel oil, etc, have made the engine sound completely different than it did before. It still sounds like a diesel (especially with the chip on a non-stock tune) with the muffled knock of compression ignition, but all the upper end clatter and cackle, the banging like a rods wanting to let loose - it's all gone.

It is amazing, what these engines are supposed to sound like. Even if someone never wanted more power or big exhaust, these little changes would make their ride tremendously more enjoyable.

I'm so impressed with my truck, i have not heard another diesel that sounds
better, as quite and smooth. little mods make a big difference.
