Does anyone know a trick to drain the HFCM before removing the filter element. Been doused with fuel for the last time. when I open up the drain it goes all over and seems to continuosly drain, it is also close to my front drive shaft. Wish they had petcock valves like the 7.3 liter. Is it just a matter of removing the water drain hex screw plug all the way and letting it drain completely before taking off the filter cap?

That's what I did, it filled a small coffee can almost 1/2 way. It helps to change the filter when the tank is below 1/4 full. I also wear Playtex gloves when doing this, I like the smell of Diesel fuel, just not when it's on me! Check out this link for a better explanation than I can give you:
Also, the replacement HFCM drain plug (the one with the knurled nut that stays on the outside of the module) serves as a "wick" for the fuel and will tend to keep the flow a bit more controlled.
Thanks for the info, sounds like I was doing it right I just needed to drain the unit using the hex drain plug before removing the filter element. Thanks again
I just got done draining the HFCM on my 2005 F250 PS FX4. 8600 miles and not a drop of water in the fuel. Several folks in this forum have stated the fuel quality in North Texas (DFW area) is high. Fuel (Valero/Diamond Shamrock) was a very light green, almost clear. I first thought it had a gold/tan color to it. There was some debris in the drained fuel.
I could not get my new brass knurled HFCM plug in! Front propeller shaft is in the way, can't get a straight in shot. I had jacked up the left front per the instructions in the Tech Forum, I suspect while this is good for draining fuel, it raises the shaft enough so you can't get the (longer) brass plug in. Will try again next time.
people have mentioned a new knurled brass plug. when I got my filters they came with 2 filters and orings thats about it. That was from Ford "Motorcraft" Am I missing something ? was I suppose to get new plugs when changing the HFCM? I would probably run into the same problem installing since I have a 4 wheel drive also. 2004 F350 FX4 Crew cab Lariat 6.0L Diesel 21000 miles. I do know this! When I drained the fuel into a stainless steel 12" bowl, There where water droplets at the bottom of the bowl. So the warning light I got for water in the fuel was right.

OK , appreciate that. So should it be replaced? what is the criteria for replacing it?
BTW thanks for Serving Navy Powerstroker, Have a great Memorial Day
I have never replaced mine but some people have had the hex in theirs, strip out so that was one good reason for getting the new style. You too have a a great Memorial Day.
Before the first drain, i went out and bought the replacement plug for the HFCM. I wasn't gonna wait to strip the threads on the stock plug before I had to go out and get a new one.
Just went out and got my new drain plug. thanks too ford doc's page it was a great help. The only problem was I went to Ford to get the part and they have no such number in their system. The local Ford dealer parts guy looked for about 20 minutes and could not match up the part number. But the International number worked great. I ordered the part and the box when I got the part also had the other part number on it! the one that was suppose to be the ford number. As far as installing it "No Problem " You have to install from above the front drive shaft on 4X4's atleast on mine you did. I also raised the front drivers side up a bit but don't see what difference that made. The only question I have is that now with the new plug you only have to finger tighten it! atleast thats what I have read. Kinda hope it can't work it's way loose from road vibrations and such. will have too see! International part number 2589259C91 as per Doc's page
