yikes!!! headlights going out on BRIGHT!!!
I have a 1970, Custom F-100 shortbed that my Dad gave me...ever since I've had the truck, when I hit the dimmer switch to brighten my headlights, after a few secs...lights go out completely. Then, if I dim them back, they will work fine for as long as I drive the truck. No problem on dim! Anyone had this problem or heard of this wierd occurrance? Glad I found the FTE buddies to help me out...

It sounds like your having the famous Ford "blinking headlight syndrome." CHeck out the tech articles. There is a good article on how to add relays to your headlights so that you don't overheat your headlight switch like the original setup. I did this to mine and have never had a problem since.

In my 1972 and my 1967 I had to replace both headlight switches. try this, in your driveway turn on your high beams let them go out, timethem till they come on. do this 2-3 times, if it consistant (the time they are off) it is the relay in the head light switch.

I don't remember seeing any relays on these old trucks. The only thing that could shut off for a few minutes and then come back on is a breaker. But that doesn't make it bad. It's whatever is heating up the breaker that needs to be looked at. The breaker is doing it's job.

There aren't any relays on the headlights of these old trucks...but the tech article referenced earlier (I think it's called "Brighter Whites") tells how to add them. The old Ford headlight switches are infamous for this problem...same thing happens to the old mustangs...
the breaker inside the headlight switch overheats and shuts the lights down...a new headlight switch should fix the problem...
