It's been while since there's been a post on this so I thought that I asked again. I am due for my 1st oil change, and need recommendations. It appears the last one was 10w-30, which makes sense with the service manual for cold weather. I am thinking now that it's spring and it should freeze again to switch to either 5W-40 or 15W-40. What about the newer oils that go up to 50 weight? What do you guy's think?
always run 15w40 in the diesel. i have heard of other grades foaming and causing drivebility problems. the injectors are fired by oil pressure and foaming oil wont fire the injectors properly.
Do most of you use Rotella? My wife's VW likes it, and it is the cheapest I can get ($48 for 6 gal @ Sam's)
thanks again
What's good for your wife's VW isn't always good for your X. I've seen and read mixed results with different oils; it's just whatever your engine prefers. Some people say that Rotella foams in your engine and causes some serious problems as you go. Some love it and run it over anything else. The same goes for Chevron's Delo, some people call it "smelo" becuase of the terrible odor it gives off. I stick to the Motorcraft that was designed specifically for my Powerstroke. It's doesn't foam and hasn't given me any problems ever. But no matter what always stick to 15w40 unless you're in a much, much colder climate.

that is what has been in my truck for 200,000 miles without a problem.i have never heard of a problem with rotella or any other diesel oil. just make sure it is diesel rated and you should be fine
I just bought my 2003 X <BSEG>6.8L V-10 about a month ago, one of the first things I did was change the oil. Since at the time I hadn't yet found this great website I had to figure out which oil to use on my own. Fortunately the manual was in the truck when I bought it, according to it they recommend and it came from the factory with 5w30 synthetic blend oil.
I have a friend who owns a repair shop and he has been the only person I let work on our cars for years, since my truck and the oil and filter are rather unique I picked up the filter and oil on the way out to his garage, I bought Mobil 1 15w30 synthetic oil (6qts) and a motorcraft oil filter, this came to 42.00 at advance auto. When I took it to my buddy the first thing he said was "you wanna know something about that oil", i cringed at first but what he told me was that it was absolutely the best, right then I decided that is what baby would have from that point on. I did however wonder what other gas v-10 owners thought of it.
One thing I wanted to say was that this is a great sight, I have spent hours on here just looking around and it has already been a useful tool, as when I got the truck I did not get the combination for the keypad lock, but on here found where to find the module where the number is printed on it and got the programming specs. Great sight!

Reason: mistake in the oil weight
