Hey guys, I got a quick question for you. Today I started my truck for the first time in 5 weeks (I just returned home from finishing my freshman year at UNH Civil Engineering Program and boy is it nice to smell diesel again!!) She fired right up, surprisingly and I let it warm up a few min. After driving around for a while, the "Engine Temp" light came on. I looked over at the temp gauge, which was a hair above the "o" in "Normal". I was a little worried, so i brought it back to the house and let it cool off for a bit. Fired it back up and the light was still on! So here are my questions:
1) what does the Engine Temp light signify? I couldn't find the actual discription in the manual, does it mean that the engine is overheating?
2) I noticed that the level of coolant was a little low, so i topped it off figuring that it may have something to due with that, no luck light still on.. so what does this light mean? Could it be a bad sensor? and if so, where is it and where can i get a replacement
If I'm not mistaken, the engine temp light can be triggered by coolant or oil temp. The coolant temp sensor is right there at the top of the water pump, and the oil temp sensor is on the back side of the HPOP reservoir on the drivers side.

I have the same problem on my 95 the engine temp light is on no matter if the truck is ice cold or up to temp, I sure wish I could figure out what turns it on the only thing I know for sure is that the sender unt on the water pump does not effect the light from going on or off. I sure hate seeing that light on............
Haha, well today i pressure washed the engine to get it ready for pulling off the valve covers tomorrow for injector o-ring and glowplug adventure (previous owner NEVER cleaned the engine, thank god for Simple Green!). After it was cleaned and dryed in the sun, I jumped in and drove it like i stole it, to....ah....well dry things off. No light on so i will just hope for the best! Maby the 2 inches thick of grime on the engine was acting as insulation and overheating it! Thanks again guys for the info, if it comes back on, i'll grab a new sensor.
when you washed your engine, did the "water in fuel" light come on? Last time I washed my engine my light cam on. I did mine at the car wash using the engine degreaser stuff. worked good and looked good to until I had to drain the fuel outta the fuel bowl. greased it right back up for me, I was super happy.
