I was towing my trailer on CA Hwy 49 through grades and switchbacks today in 100 degree heat. I started to notice my trans temp gauge on the dashboard started to climb up, a little above the usual, but not even near the yellow range. I knew it was getting a bit hot. Then, my ABS light came on. I pulled over and let it idle for about 15 min. The needle on the trans temp went back down to normal.
I turned the engine off and started it again. Put it in D and then the ABS light went off.
I pulled the trans dip stick and smelled it and it did not smell burnt. It was still red.
Should I be concerned? Should I replace the fluid with synthetic? What synthetic trans fluid is out there?
Again, driving back home from camping the transmission temp gauge started to rise as I ascended up the Grapevine on I-5. About 3/4 of the way up I saw it go up where the needle was not in the round circle anymore. I pulled over and let it idle and cool down for about 10 min. Sprayed some cold water on the fins on the radiator and oil cooler through the grill.
This time, I did not wait until the ABS light to come on. I towed non-stop from Fresno, CA up to this point (about 140 miles). Outside temp was 98 degrees.
I don't ever recalling my trans. temp moving at all last summer even going up the Cajon Pass nor the Grapevine. (6% grade for 4 miles or so). Trailer weight loaded was over 7K lbs.
If I change my trans cooler to the 6.0L cooler, would that improve it from a V10 cooler?
Thank you, Scott. How much does one of those coolers go for? How difficult is it to install?
I paid $245 including shipping from Ed the Parts Guy, sponsor on here.
Install should be simple although I didn't do it so can't tell you for sure. I just had the tranny shop put it on when they put my new BTS tranny in. It fits in the same location but the hose fitting are different.
Honestly, before you buy a cooler or even when you buy a cooler, I would get a GOOD trans temp gauge. The stock gauge doesn't give you a whole lot of information.
Look into a ScanGuageII if you want something real easy to use and is multi-functional.

Did you say $245 for the 6.0L cooler? Was it the 31 or 26 row? I went to eds website and thought they were about $100 more than that. I have been looking for a 31 fin cooler for about a month.
$245 is a great price as the 6.0L 31 fin lists for $562
I got a 31 row off EB (new) for $250 delivered to TX. Fleabay75 was the seller). He had several.
It's a pretty easy install but you do need to "adapt" the 1/2' hose of the 6.0 cooler to the 3/8" hose of the standard cooler lines. There are several ways to do that. I'd also reccomend a filter install at the same time. Magnafine is what I used (OEM for Ford).
I just called a ford dealership. The 02 V10 cooler has been superseded by the same one used on the 05 6.0 Excursion part no. 3C3Z-7A095-AA for $205.59.
The one for the 07 F250 6.0L is 5C3Z-7A095-CA for $301.
Is it safe to assume the 07 cooler is the 31 row and will fit the 02 V10 Excursion?
