Question who has owned a 460?

I currently drive a 97 F-250HD 460 5spd. I am lookin to get a PowerSroke (95-97) , would love to get a superduty but i dont want to spend that much. Has anyone here done the move from a 460 to a PSD? What difference in power and mpg's would i notice? I currently get about 9-10mpg empty, a bit worse when i put my 9' camper on.

Thanks for the input guys!!
Jeff

MPG wise you will get 15-20, depending on diff. gears, and drving style. As far as power, it's almost a totally different kind of power where the 470 can get up and go (has the HP) but the 7.3 has the torque. So you will be able to sustain a long pull up a hill, etc... Other guys will have more to say i'm sure

I owned an F250 460 auto 4.10 rearend towed a 29' travel trailer with it. I never had a power problem with it. My sole complaint was fuel economy it got 9 mpg empty and 6 mpg with trailer in tow.

I changed to the PSD auto 3.55 rearend towed the same trailer. Power about the same maybe a little better fuel economy a major improvement empty I get 15 to 18 mpg and I drive it hard Trailer in tow I get 10 to 12

you will love the psd. go drive one. although if its a stock one it will probably be a dog. if you tow a lot and it sounds like you do i would recommend the 5 speed. psd and e4od dont get along especially when you start to mod your psd.

with some bigger injectors a chip intake and exhuast you can be easily over 300 rwhp and over 650 ft lbs of torque.

Zinfinity, just looked at your gallery and man is that a clean looking rig you got yourself there! very nice! Although i've not had the 460, I can say that'd i've driven one (and have owned 2 PSD's) and personally never go back to gas. Like psu927, it's "torque" power instead of "horse power" power. The torque on there trucks is amazing. With a few mods, intake exhaust, you will never go back to gas. Depending on how heavy your foot is, you can get between 14-18 ish MPG empty and around 10-14 towing, depending on what you're pulling. Go drive one, see what you think. The only challenge is going to be finding one as nice as you're current rig!

I have had 2 460s one carburated the other injected both pigs on fuel the injected truck had more get up and go. I went to a IDI about 6 years ago sold that went to a 95 PSD a year ago I will never go back to gas again.

With my F-450 I get around 11-13.5 mpg which is hell of a lot better than 6-8 mpg the 460 used to get never really got better than 8mpg empty.

My 94 460 was a great truck for it's day. I made the switch last year and haven't looked back. Of you don't tow or drive a lot of miles gas is good but if you do, diesel is tops.

my 1995 f350 with the 460 got about 10mpg, loved the truck though and had lots of power, sold it 4 years ago(wish i hadn't now) and now own a 2004 psd. the power is great and the mpg is even better.

i just wish i would have kept my 1995 for a toy.....will be in the market later this year for another one.................

Zinfinity-

I had a 89 460 for 4 years. Loved it until it blew up on the side of hte freeway due to a blown fuel line. Never thought I could afford a PSD until I started looking on the used truck dealer market. Found a beauty and i never look back. Doubled my milage and tripled my peace of mind. (Temp goes down when stuck in traffic... ;>))
