Actually, they save a lot of time and money removing the distributor. Think about the holes machined in the block, the machining of the dizzy itself, etc.
The Ford modulars don't even have a place to put the dizzy and the oil pump is driven directly by the crank, being behind the timing cover.
well that, and a distributor is mechanical, they have been trying to change as much over as they can to electronic, because generally speaking it lasts longer, due to no mechanical wear, and it's lighter, more accurate, and lets the computer do what it wants to the spark the make the motor run the most efficient. not that I'm pucking electronic garbage, I love my mechanical everything, easier to work on I think, but the way manf. are going is reasonable I think.
mechanical easier to work on maybe, but there is something appealing about being able to change your timing electronically.
One day, I hope to use a ford edis 8 module with the Megasquirt FI to fuel and spark the soon to be 390. The main prob I've seen while researching is what to do with the dizzy. At the moment you cant just ditch it b/c of the oil pump.
Somewhere out there i found some dizzy plugs that would drive the oil pump but are flush on the surface, but none for an FE. At the moment I'm torn between either getting something machined, or just leaving a dizzy in there unhooked.
Im sure THAT would get some looks if you started it with the hood open!
LMAO That would be fun! Run a housing with enough shaft to hold the pump drive together. Attach a plain flat cover on top, tell everyone you have gone Wi-Fi or some silly thing. LOL
