i put this in this forum because it is FE specific, i hope thats OK. what 4 or 5 speed will go behind an FE. What should i ask for when i call or go to a junk yard in regard to this. i dont kow anything about trannies so please dont respond like,
"well you need a gr45939, and then get the br549 contorquetion thingamabob, and convert it to oxydental use only and you'll be set"
what do i need besides tranny, bell housing, shifter, linkage, pedal assymbly?
thanks guys of all the message boards i've ever taken part in yall are easily the best all around crew of folks.
I would think that the most popular manual tranny would be the NP-435. NP means New Process. These were used by all of the big-3 automakers. You should have absolutely no problem finding one at a salvage yard. It is a heavy duty 4-speed with a granny 1st. It is also suppose to be very easy to rebuild with just common hand tools.
I think the tail shaft housing came in 2 different lengths. Maybe 2WD versus 4WD but I'm not sure.
As for your parts list you will need the yoke for the rear of the tranny. This slips into the rear of the tranny and connects to the drive shaft though the U-joint. Also something to think about is the "tranny hump" in the cab. These came is 2 sizes depending on your tranny. I have a 435 and am 4WD so I have the high hump.
What sort of project are you working on? Swapping an auto for a manual?
here is the scoop, you can check out my previous post "whats up guys" to get the first half, well buying the 2 other trucks fell through. so my bro is trading me an old we think 75 with 3/4 ton running gear 4x4 made into short wheel base, frame was chopped and welded and shot box put on it, it has a 400 with an auto in it right now but we dont think it runs very well, i love FE's and have a spare block with heads D2's i think and 4v intake and everything it has the 390 crank and the rods. it is also a mirror 105 block. so i want to build it and put it in with a 4 speed, or i'd really love a 5 speed, but i think that will get into mucho dinero $$$ this truck will only be used to haul tow and play, so i want a manual, my current ranger is stick and with the "smaller" city i live in you can get aroun OK with a stick shift.
and lee your post was very informative and i appreciat it
should i get the fly wheel and pressure plate and stuff too? and is the NP something I can rebuild in my own shop, and if so where can i get a rebuild kit?
The most commonly recommended 5 spd is the NV 4500 that was used in dodge and chebby pickups. You'll need a belhousing adapter from advance adapters as well as an FE bellhousing from a 4 speed trans. There are a few guys on here that have done this and I start drooling every time I read about it. Maybe we should all get together and see about getting a group discount on a bunch of them.
I'm no expert and plan on running an auto behind my motor, but, seems the current 5-speeds may have some issues witht he torque the FE puts down. Check in with the guys on the trans board, maybe they can help more as well.
For more info you should do a search for 5 spd conversion or nv4500 on the transmission board, there are a few threads about it there. I wouldn't be too concerned about the strength of the tranny because it is used behind the cummins diesel in the dodge pickups without much trouble.
i relize that this was poasted well over a year ago but if you or any one else is interested in putting a nv-4500 behind a FE ford i have done it and it works like a dream.
Just a shot in the dark, but - didn't some of the heavier trucks have "FE" engines in them, like the F-500's ? they had 5-spd tranys. The only problem I see at the moment is the mounting to the frame. May need to make a "custom" crossmember.
I would recommend a toploader 4 speed but if you want a five speed, TKO makes a 5 speed that is strong enough for a 400 hp FE. You can use a bell housing from lakeland to match it all up. Bring your wallet stuffed with green though, as it will run you around $2k for parts.
THats the problem with doing a 4spd swap.. about the Cheapest Ive found is a 2spd Overdrive box that goes infront of the Np435 from Advance Adapters. its about 1500 bucks, and gives you effectivly a 8 spd (a normal and OD for each gear) Its what Im planning to install into my 75
We have similiar "projects" ? Have a '75 250 SC. Needs bed replaced - needs further prep end prime for paint- ALWAYS l@@king for info - behind an "FE",435 / D60. Used for camping / picnics / farm truck - Heard some 435's HAD / could be installed a PTO . ??? ( PTO to winch ) - Old Lumber Co./ Power Co. trucks -
