Just remove the plugs and examine them.
If all is well they should have a uniform light tan color.
Since it was shuddering, it sounds like a misfire and the color can help you determine the cause. Post back with your results.
Did it smooth out after it ran a little while?

We don't have much to go on. Looking at the plugs is to try to see what's wrong. If they are the same, if you have a rich (black) or lean (white) condition. The plugs rarely go that bad suddenly unless something broke.
The backfire is new information, was it through the intake or the exhaust?
Look carefully at all the hoses connected to the intake to see if any have come off or broken.

You need to remove the plugs from the engine and look at the firing end.
A slight brownish to grayish tan tent to them is normal.
Ash deposits, light brown, almost white deposits encrusted on the plugs. suggests new valve guides are needed
Black is rich, or oily deposits. suggests new valve guides or rings are needed, or the fuel mixture is off.
..........
Your oil is getting chunky? Is it tuning white? metal lumps?

I would definatley change the oil, and possibly have it tested.
Metal lumps suggest mechanical damage inside the engine of some kind.
If you have a Computer. Run the codes.
It could be a sticky EGR perhaps, or a faulty Ported Vacuum switch.
At least the plugs are normal, thats a good sign at least.
