Im buying a 2000 f250 crew with the 7.3 and want to change the fuel filter right away as I dont know when it was changed last, is that the only filter the little tiny one along the frame rail? I ask this beacuse I have had several duramax's before having trouble with my 05 and buying the fords and they had bigger spin on filters. If it is, does anyone make a better aftermarket to replace this thing? It seems kinda wimpy!
There are other filter kits/media available, but unless you are getting routinely bad fuel, I see no reason to change the stocker for aftermarket. The spin-on's don't allow you to drain the water out, and if you keep getting bad fuel , would advise switching brands or stores. The stock filter seems to keep most of the crud out of the injectors as I have not heard of any complaints here on the FTE site in perhaps 6 -8 months. Changing it often seems to be the best prevention-- every 10 K miles is about right for me.
Fleet Autozone, Napa et all have a bunch of inexpensive elements. do a search on the term fuel filter.
If you have a small one under the framerail, it's most likely something that a previous owner added, since the truck doesn't come with one there stock. The only stock one on yours is in the valley of the engine, towards the front, right behind the HPOP resivoir.
If you wanted to add an aftermarket one, you can get some that are fuel/water seperators as well. I have a Dalh 150 unit installed on my truck. You can see pictures of it in my gallery. Since I have a suitable filter and water seperator on the truck, I have removed my stock fuel bowl entirely, both because it's no longer necessary and in preperations for installing a BTS dual HPOP.
I believe the indirect injection engines (pre 94) have spin on filters, but the 94.5-97 PSD has virtually the same filter as yours. Actually they are quite a bit different, but it is a replaceable element type that mounts in the same location as yours.
