I have a early 1999 Powerstroke, 4 x 4 3/4 ton pickup. I am interested in buying a code reader but have no idea what I need other than it should be OBD II. I have looked at Checker, Autozone and Ebay and have just added confusion. What is the correct reader that is realitively inexpensive that will still do the job? Thanks
Kragen had special on readers last season for $19.99, but none of the store in the 40-mile radius had them on stock.
Than having AutoZone renting the advanced readers for free, why would I want to spend money on one?
Autoenginuity(About $350 for enhanced Ford bundle) running on a laptop or PDA. I know it's expensive but if you have your truck for awhile it may be worth the investment. I love it! Can do so many things, run diagnostics, read and clear all codes. Monitor many parameters.
Just my .02.

Be careful with some of those hand held scanners from Autozone, Checker, etc. Some of them will not pull codes from diesels. I've asked to see if the scanners they offer could pull codes from my truck, and none of them could. I had 2 codes stored that I later retrieved at a repair shop.
I don't really want to spend $350 and use a laptop just to read the few codes that I will get if therer is a problem. So if the Autozone and Checker readers don't do the job what do I use???

Unfortunately, you will need to spend around $350 plus to pull codes from the PSD. You need one that will read Ford enhanced codes. Auto Xray 6000 will do what you want without a laptop, but it runs $400 plus, depending on where you look.
Got mine before it was released to the public. I know the program developer and he used my PSD as one of his test mules for program testing, verification, etc.
I think I just saw code readers on blackclouddieselperformance.com for like 79 dollars. Now I would think these would pull codes off of diesels so they might be worth checking out.
