I Have a 71 F100 with power steering and the lines from the pump to geer box are oozing fluid thru the rubber. I have considered cutting the metal line and clamping new rubber hose from the line to the pump. Can I do this or is there too much pressure in these lines?
This would be a great time to completely flush your system. Disconnect the return line (plug the fitting on the back of the pump and disable ignition) and crank the engine over while catching the old fluid in a pail. Keep refilling the pump until the fluid runs clean. Then replace the pressure line and return line from the gearbox to the pump for around $25.
To answer your question though, don't try to mend the pressure line.
That bring up a question I've been wanting to ask. My Power Steering unit making a "clacking" sound when she idles. I have a 69 F250 /390 (newer engine).. It does seem when it clacks it will stop if I turn the wheel and put it under stress. Should I seek a new unit (junkyard tyoe) or I hear you can get re-build units or is the nosie from the pulley bearing?
My pump was doing the same thing (making noise).
Soon after I'd discovered the noise, the pump started leaking at the front as well. I'd replace that pump if I were you. Go to your nearest parts store and get a rebuilt one. Roughly 60-70 dollars.
You will be pleased with the results.
The clack could be belt noise. Try to take the glaze off of the belt to see if it helps or get some water on it to see if there is a change in noise. I have had that problem on two of my trucks. Just something to check and rule out.

My pump made noises at idle it was cracking like you all are describing. I changes pumps like 3 times befor I found one that did not make noise, Oreily's has a lifetime warenty on their rebuilt pumps for like 40 bucks.
