First time bondo job help.

hey guys,
i just bought my new 1995 Ford PSD quad cab dually. when i brought it home i noticed that on the left hand quarter pannel there was a paint bubble. and just today i was washing it and the paint blew away and leaving a pretty good sized bare metal spot. i would like to fix it and have never used bondo in my life. i have some bondo body filler some sand paper, and the paint and need to know what to do. its not rusted all the way through and it did not look to be rusty when the paint came off. it just liked flaked/boiled off. and there are other little tiny bubbles around that area and also in that area there is rust colored paint. but the paint is good and solid where its colored like that.
so how should i go about doing this? should i sand down the area bondo it and sand again and paint? or should i just sand and paint? the metal is pretty smooth. there are a few small pits that i can fil with bondo. but do i need to even bondo the whole area? any advice on how to go about doing this would be awsome!!!!
thanks a alot guys!!!!
Mitch

Sounds like you have little rust. I would sand, add minimal body filler (red), and prime, then paint. If it's what I think it is, the truck has been painted before, and the primer(if any) was exposed to moisture prior to paint, giving you the problem you have now.

-check the back side of the panel where its rusted see if its rusted there too
-your bondo is fine
well your filler dosnt stick well to paint, so you need to sand as said before, put as little filler in as possible, then youll have to sand again, more bondo, sand again, youll see, not hard. Then when thats done youll end up with your panel with the bondo on it (sanded and dry by now) and you should be able to run your hand over it and it should be smooth all over and flat and should blend nicely with the rest of the panel.
-if its just small pits as you say, you may be able to spread the filler in those areas with a razor blade
so far as painting goes, make sure you got the right color, cause if you paint green on dark green, forest green, god knows what green, then itll stick out like a sore thumb.

Just wanted to add one thing to what I6 wrote. You mentioned something about''little tiny bubbles'' around the area where the paint flaked off. This sounds like a problem called''solvent pop''.Are you sure this particular panel(not the whole truck)hasn't been repaired at some time? This is a common problem with an older repair or older paint.Paint cures very slowly;it can sometimes take7-10 days to cure all the way down to the metal if paint is not baked. If it is exposed to a lot of heat, sometimes the solvent in the paint that is trapped down in it will break to the surface instead of slowly evaporating. This will leave tiny ''pits'' under the paint that will eventually become tiny holes. If you think that is the problem, you'll have to sand down to the bottom of these or your new paint will still have these little holes in it.I have over 25 years in the paint/body buisness and this is the only way I have found to get rid of solvent pops permanently.Good luck and hope this helped.
