i was wondering how long exactly will bondo last (when applied correctly). i am just wonderign how long tat the bondo will last on my truck. i hope atleast 3-4 years. i plan ion getitng a new paintjob considering i have spent lots fo time getting the truck ready to be painted using bondo and grinding off the rust in areas. so hope good is it really.
any of oyu out their with stories about bondo bad and good stories. i want to know
It has to be applied to rust-free metal. It will stick to paint, but not if it is rusting underneath. The stuff is polyester resin (the boat and surfboard kind) and talc (talcum powder) as the lightweight filler. It was originally called "El Bondo".
I would not apply over paint. Rough off the paint with a grinding wheel or an extremely rough sanding pad (60 to 80 grit). The bondo will adher to the rough surface extremely well. If you want it to last for years alway have metal WELDED in place - do not fill in holes with bondo. Bondo will stick surprising well to anything but a roughed up surface works best.
I saw a Camaro that a body shop was slapping togather for a dealer. They didn't grind the rust off or patch the rust holes with metal. Just used a hammer to pound a dent where the rust was and filled it with bondo up to 3 INCHES thick. Local kid bought it because the dealer told him it was just repainted and a lot of work had been done. Looked good for a year then the paint started to peel, two years later the rust started to bubble around the wads of bondo, three years he sold it for near scrap price.
If it's dented or rusty it's actually better to get replacement panels and weld them in. Then use the bondo to smooth it all out, but make sure it's smooth and not rippled (run your hand over it.)
yeah the dude im getitng it painted by, he said to run your hand over the area. he noticed the spots were it was not smooth and told me to sand them smooth with a hand sander/plain. i got a think called a wiizz disk used to grind off the rust. it shoudl work but im waiting for the weather to warm up a bit. cause it is dawn right freezing out. hard to work and the bondo dosnt relaly liek cold weather. but it does work bondo allthough it says nto to be used in freezing temps it does work really well.
thansk for oyur input guys. got a bigger problem now.
i saw the hand shaper thing once and i just never theought of using it. yeah i noticed how crappy bondo works on rust. have soem problems on my door but im just guann cut it/ grind it out. im really need a garage!
