Hi there, getting ready to sandblast my '64 in the next couple of weeks and was wondering after i blast the the truck, can i use inexpensive rust paint to coat the bare metal instead of expensive epoxy primer and spray an adhesion promoter or regular primer later when i do decide to paint the truck? It's going to take some time to fix up the body panels when i finish blasting, so i wouldn't be painting the truck until later on this summer. Thanks!
personally i would still use the epoxy primer because some fillers etc dont adhere overly well to etching primers etc... this is not always the case but it can be a problem. and if you are not going paint it for a while a lot of etching type primers dont really protect that well from moisture.
but at the end of the day if its kept dry and you sand off the etching type primer before using any fillers you probably wont have any problems either way.
Hard question to answer, if you only have an etching primer on a bare metal surface and there is high humidity or it gets wet this could start rust pretty much straight away (this may not look like rust as you may not be able to see it, but once the moisture gets to the metal is starts) this rust may never become a problem but it can increase to be bad rust or cause lamination of the paint down the track, paint cracking, etc.. so keep it dry and covered and you should be fine, if this moisture did get in, it would probably take a quite a long time to show anyway like 5-10 years
Well, you guys are probably right. Pay a bit extra and get the expoxy primer. I suppose you want to get it right the first time. Cost of doing business, i guess.
