I took my [1995, 2WD, automatic, F150] to the dealer for the cruise control safety recall and, also had them hook up the computer diagnostic analyzer up- due to a shift problem that on ocassion, the "RPMs" will go high and there is a delayed shift, that bangs into the next gear' and the [over drive] light starts to flash. At this point it is neccasary to turn the ignition off and restart the motor.
To make a long story short they got a speed-sensor malfunction code. So I went to the parts store, but I cant find any info in my repair manual as to the location or, installation procedure for the new sensor? If anyone can point me in the right direction it would sure be appreciated . THANK'S ! BUSSTTED.
Most auto parts stores will know it as the "ABS Sensor." This sensor is located in the rear differential, directly on top. I believe one bolt holds it in.
This sensor doubles as the ABS sensor and the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor.) In 1992, Ford discontinued using the speedometer cables on these style trucks and switched over to the VSS/ABS combo sensor.
I have already replaced that sensor. Is there a output speed sensor comming of the trans. I traced the cables and can"t locate anything . Is this thing on the top of the trans or did the parts store sell me a sensor for another trans.
The VSS sensor, which you said you replaced, is in the rear differential, on top.
The code that you speak of probably indicated a VSS/PSOM error (Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module) which is mounted on the back of your instrument cluster.
Basically, the PSOM picks up a signal from the VSS, and then sends that information to the computer. If the speedometer jumps around at high speeds and the transmission shifts erraticly, then the VSS is probably bad. If the speedometer needle doesn't jump around at all and works great, chances are the VSS is good, but the PSOM is not sending likeable information to the computer, or any information for that matter, causing it to shift erraticly.
So basically, does the speedometer needle bounce all over the place at around 65-70 MPH, and possibly lower?
