I'll first state that I know this modification is not for everyone. I was looking at my dash today and thinking that if I removed the cigarette lighter I could mount a pushbutton starter. Anyone put one there before? Thanks.
I did something similar with my non-truck Ford (an '84 Grand Marquis). The ignition switch broke, and rather than drill the old one out to replace it, I ran the wires back into the dash and mounted the new ignition switch there. Now, it LOOKS like it still requires a key to start my car, but a simple push on the homemade brass plunger in the dash starts her up every time. Considering that this car is also a homemade convertible, the only theft device I employ is ignorance. Would-be joyriders don't know how to start it! It's nice not needing a key to drive my car.
Do you still want to use the key? If so, use a push button and wire it to the S terminal on the starter relay - this will crank the starter. Then you will need to use the key to turn on the power to the ignition, and push the button to engage the starter.
i have a push button starter in my '86 diesel. i still use the key to turn it on and off but i use a button to engage the starter. the ignition switch works, just does not work in the start position. neither did the new one i put in.
i'm used to the push button now and my friends get a kick out of it.

That's exactly how I thinking of doing it, my key works fine but the lighter never gets used so I thought a starter pushbutton would look good in its place. Now I'll have to measure the opening and find one that will fit with minimal hassle.
One note, if you install a button to the “s” terminal you are bypassing the neutral safety switch that will allow the rig to start in gear. The good news is that most damage will be covered by your homeowners insurance. The bad news is that if someone gets hurt you will lose you home.
Ok since the topic is here. I was going to set my truck to push button but when i pulled the ignition switch out there were about 10 wires and all were really short so hard to cut and play with. Which ones do I need to use or is there another way about going to this?
I thought my switch was shot only to find there is some resistance wire in the setup somewhere that burned out.

This is a common break. There is a cheap metal part that is broke in the column - ignition rack. It causes the key to not go to the start position. Usually costs about $50 for a shop to fix. Or you could do it yourself a lot cheaper, if you are comfortable inside a column. But if you like the button - go for it...
yeah, the button goes well with the toggle switch-activated glow plugs and fast idle solinoid. 3 manual switches in all. a little redneck i know but thats what gives it its personality.
back on topic, haven't needed a button for my '77. i like the dash mounted ignition switch the way it is.
