the 4wd will not engage. I will check the fuses and wire connections but does anyone know what type of system ford uses to switch into 4wd? (it looks like a power window motor)Funny that the last post is for the same thing are the pushbuttons known to fail frequently?
The auto 4wd is terrible. Most people have problems with them. We have problems with our '86 and '90 right now. So much for 4wd in the winter, huh? Mine stuck for so long, I think it sheared the teeth off. It sounded terrible!! Most will tell you to go to manual lockouts if you want to have something that will last longer. Last time I heard, it was almost $1,000.00 to fix the auto, and about $150 for the manual. Just depends what you want, and good luck!! Angela
I heard that the push button 4 wheel drive works on magnetos and brushes or some kind of junk similar to that. Well I heard you have to engage the 4 wheel drive every once in a while like once a month to keep it working. Otherwise a lot of dirt and grime builds up there for causing nothing to engage. To fix it you have to take the unit apart and clean out the mechanism. I think. I though I saw a post that discussed this a while ago. Don't feel to bad. My 90 has manual lockouts and t-case and I have to move the shifter every once in a while to keep it moving freely otherwise it gets really stiff. I'll have to check my gear oil for that one.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
If you are still having problems email me directly. I put the same system on my 84 BII. I've got the pubs and a T/S'ing guide. Should be able to get ya fixed up in a few hours.
Well, as far as I know, the t-case used in the B2 has slight oiling problems. You can tear into it to to work on its pumping(throws oil at components) or you can put it in 4x4-both ranges and drive it for a little while. Do this at least twice every month and that usually takes care of it. If you have already damaged the T-Case...um, thats expensive to tear into. Good Luck
when i got my 88 bronco 2 the push button 4 wheel wouldnt work so i crawled under neith and removed the motor assembly from the trnasfer case. I took it apart it does have bushings in it and i was missing a spring on one of them. I pulled apart a ball point pen, cut the spring down to the aprox size, and well after much cursing finally got it back together and it works. My bushings are pretty well worn down and i have not gone to ford to ask what a new motor will cost or if there is a kit to replace the bushings. Keep in mind they are soldered in but hey if your handy and have a bench to work on it shouldnt be too hard to solder new bushings in. Take some sand paper to the motor itself and clean it up some before putting it back and you should be good as new. that is if the problem doesnt lie else where. Oh yea and one more thing the wire that you will see keeping you from taking the unti fro under the truck i just clipped it and wire nut the wires back together till i have the ambition to get under it again and solder the wire and shrink tube it. Hope this helps =)
