What type of plugs should I use on a 78 351M? I have been using the ones the PO had been puting in. Did some research and found out they were for Dodge trucks. They are the 13/16" type. The parts store says I should be using the smaller ones. The problem is the larger ones have more reach and the tip extends into the chamber about a thread or two. but the smaller ones dont reach that far in. So I am wondering what a good one is. Engine has a few mods on it, +.30, 4bbl holley, bigger cam, headers, Multi spark Mallory, coil, Unilite distrib.
Also am looking for recommendations on oil. Using Castrol 20w50 now. Whats the norm?
hey, my post came back! thanks, it has some good info in there about the zinc content of different brands and weights of oils. find your oil and the zinc is the last column on the far right.
the standard Champion is currently RV17YC, they have been changing the recommended heat range over the years to keep up with the changes in the blend of fuel.

I just changed my plugs with autolite double platinum plugs. I have always used standard autolite plugs and I noticed a difference with the platinum plugs. Could be they are just new though. I'm so ate up with getting better gas mileage I have a huge vacuum gauge hooked up in my cab. I can see the slightest stumble or miss. None, with the platinum plugs.

I'm interested more about your platinum plug experience. Is it just smoother running you are experiencing? What ignition are you running? Do you have the plug part number? I'm like you, I have a vacuum gauge in my cab as well, they are great for fine tuning.
I just got a set of autolite platinum AP25 for my truck. The guy at Adavance Auto works full time at the local Ford dealership parts department. These are what he recommended I run on my 351m. New engine, rv cam, edelbrock 600 carb. Hope this helps. Jim

Thanks for the part number, Jim I checked the Autolite cross reference chart and those are cross referenced with the new Bosch Platinum plugs I have sitting in my tool box. I don't know how good the Bosch's are, but they have been sitting in my tool box for years, still in the original packaging
fatfndr, I have the factory ignition. Seat of my paints is telling me I’m getting better acceleration. And I think its getting better mpg, to early to tell though.

i would recommended the platinum plugs. they don't cost much more, but last longer and give great performance. I have been running them for 4+ years in my '79 f250 400m and liked them so well that I bought a set for my '67 bronco 289
I am running the Bosch premium platinum and have had good results. I bought the '79 with the platinums in it already, but I have noticed a smoother running engine in my 67 bronco with the platinums even though I am still running the stock point/condensor ignition/distriburator combination. The Bronco runs like a top with 85,000 miles on it with only minor service work to the engine. (new plugs, wires, points, condensor, carb kit)
I have a 78 F250 with the 400(practicly the same engine) and i have 69786 miles and i use the mobil one higher mileage engines. It seems to work great. Even got a little better gas mileage. As far as spark plugs, i just went to auto zone and picked up a cheap set of plugs and the are doing great.
