so while changing my water pump yesterday, i noticed a sticker that had some basic part info on my car. it included spark plug type, how to check timing, and what oil type to use... for as long as i've been changing my oil, i have been using 10w30... the sticker says i should be using 5w30... is that bad?
when i first got my aero, ran 5w50 Castrol Syntec. got the same gas mileage then as now. hot or cold. takeoff and pulling the same as 30 weight. running 10w30 Chevron Supreme now only because it's CHEAP.
ran 0w20 Mobil 1 for awhile.
gas mileage all the same.
almost no measurable difference in our mild NW climate between 5w and 10w oils at our start temps in winter. we're above 32d F 99% of the time Nov>Mar.
cold temp startup viscosity only comes into play below 20d F and is really noticeable below 0d F. we don't see those temps here in Vanc./Port.
all 30 weight oils are in the same viscosity spec. range at 100d C 212d F rated hot temp
Ford recommended 7500 mile oil changes in normal service on the Aero. far too long with the hot enclosed poorly cooled engine.
no more than 6000 freeway or 5000 intown suburban. new oil filter each time.
I run Royal Purple oil, and Mobil1 Extended Interval filters. Amsoil is also rated to 15,000 miles.
Please note, before you consider using an extended life oil, you need to verify the condition of your engine. No point putting a premium oil in an engine that burns more than one quart every 2 or 3 thousand miles. Also no point using a premium oil if the engine has a blowby problem.
..........Is the winter rating. At brass monkey winter temps thinner 5w oil is what runs nicely into the shell bearings & stops the clattering sound of metal to metal contact at start up.
If your down in Florida, or any of those lower states 10W 30 is quite thin enough for winter start-up's. Mine gets 10W30 in summer & 5W30 in winter, I'm in the GWN,,, well the milder part of it.
You do generallt want to runt he thinnest oil that will still protect the engine. I would vote for the 5w30. thats what Ford recommends, and thats what I run in my own engines.
hahaha nice. funny story about that oil thing (not w my aero of course) i was at work today, checking in a one way 14ft truck, and noticed i could hear the valves ticking. so i check the oil, and just as i thought, it was a half a quart low. so i'm lookin around an notice that ford reccomends using 10w30 (it's badged f350, but it's a box van) for oil. yet u-haul says only use 15w-30... interesting?

Was it a Diesel DCRB?
If so, the 7.3L takes 10w30 during the winter and 15w-40 during the summer.
