Last week i posted about having my starter drive go out for no apparent reason, Well i got a new one to replace it and today put it all together and put the starter on the motor and it worked just like new. I shut it off and went to get some tools to adjust the timing and i came back to start it and the starter drive made a grinding sound just like it did the first time now its teeth are missing again. What it causing it to do this?
I pulled the inspection tin off and the fltwheel looks good. The problem that baffles me is that it worked just fine last year when i took the engine trans and transfer case out of the truck in one piece. I never took the engine off from the trans. It must be something in the starter.
were you able to inspect all the teeth in the flywheel? You could be missing a small section and whenever it engages in that spot it will eat your starter.
I think i found the problem I looked at one of my parts trucks and the starter that was on the motor causing the problem looked totaly different. The biggest difference was that the starter that was causing the problem had the bottom bolt hole reamed out way to big. compared to the starter on the parts truck. Im thinking the previous owner cobbled up the starter to work. because it never caused problems before i took it off the engine. So i replaced it with the starter from the parts truck and it works just fine now.
i LOOKED IT UP IT WAS THE WRONG STARTER. Yes i hate it when things are cobbled up. I think it was either not engaging or getting too close to the flywheel. Thanks for the help
