New to the site, like what I see. Now why I stumbled apon this site.
I have a 1986 f350 with the 460 in it, manual trans, had it for 3 years now. Last year the starter went out, I replace the starter with one from Napa, and a new selinoid from Autozone. And shortly before put a new battery and brain box. About 2 months later the starter started to grind, and replaced it again from napa. Another 2 months go by and starter starts to grind again, replaced with starter from autozone, about a month goes by replace again, and so on and so on almost 12 diffrent starters, each time less and less time between replacement.
Last fall some where around starter 6 or 7 I replaced the flywheel for fear of that being the problem, also tried starters from orileys and carquest. Also ground starter to battery, incase we wern't getting a good ground, battery puts out 12.5 when cranked like wise selinoid.
Nobody seem to know what else to try, my last thought is to go the bone yard and try to find a starter and have it rebuilt.
I have some thoughts, but need to ask this first. When it's grinding, does it still turn the engine over or is it slipping on the gears? I know you replaced the flywheel, so I'm guessing it's still turning over when grinding.
Couple things to check:
Are the teeth on the starters being ground off in any way, as in the sides or edges?
Is there any marks on the face of the bendix? (seen in red)
Welcome to the forums. One thing to check, pull the starter, have someone operate the clutch while you watch the flywheel for back and forth movement. It could be a thrust issue. It is becoming more of an issue as these motors get more age on them.
thanks for the responses. A liitle more info after reading some of your questions and suggestions. When the motor is cold we don't have an issue with the grinding, once warm when we try to start it will grind. When it does grind, begining of the start is usally grind free, but towards the end before it fires it will start to grind. First 2 starters had ground teeth, but since then we've had starter housings come loose, and the area at the tip where the shaft sit in the housing for lack of a better term, has come loose or even broken.
I will check if there is play in the fly wheel when clutch is pushed. when I replaced flywheel, I relaced the clutch at the same time, truck has 70k miles on it.
If you say it is grinding at the end of cranking I would guess that the starter is too close to the ring gear and the engine is driving the starter.
Measure for movement when depressing the clutch, and how far it is from the mounting surface to the ring gear with the clutch pushed in.
You might just need a shim or a manual specific starter motor.
Sounds like your timing is advanced, when cold the starter will sound normal, hot will not not want to crank over. I have seen starters explode the nose cone from this
Might want to check what brand of DSII module is in the truck.
I've heard that the cheap Chinese ones do not have the proper timing retard while cranking feature.
IIRC it's only a few degrees, but enough to make a difference in my truck.
