Hi guys!
I have a 1982 f 150. When I crank it over there is a horrible grinding noise. I have located it and it is the starter. It seems to be eating off the front of the starter drive...like it is not engaging the drive far enough. Here are the details.... I put in a new 351 HO crate motor got it all together and then had to listen to the starter grind. replaced the starter... better but not for long...replaced the ring gear...better but not for long.long story short the darn thing keeps eating the starter drives up... the ring gear doesnt seem to be damaged though...any help????????
That's what I'd put my money on. I think the 2 have a different amount of teeth as well. IIRC, the flywheels have 157 teeth and the flexplates 164 with one or the other occasionally having either. I'm thinking it is the flexplates, but IDK... I think the manual starter has 8 teeth and the auto 9 but again, something I'm fuzzy on.
It makes sense though, that the teeth would almost ingage and chew up with the wrong amount of teeth. I do remember vaugely mention of the longer snout, but IIRC that was on a Toyota swap with a C6. It could be that the swap kit used the oddball flexplate/teeth set-up.
