egt temps

I have a 2003 Ford Excursion 7.3l. I just added the MBRP 4" exhaust. I mounted an egt gauge on the downpipe fitting. What is the danger temp or what temp should I never exceed???

thanks

About 950 max. U can go a little over that for short intervals.
Short interval= 30 seconds or so.

It really depends on where you are reading your temp. Before the turbo or after.
Pre turbo max is1300
post turbo max is 1100

I have post turbo also I would NEVER!!!!!!!! go over 1000 post and thats only getting there for a second or 2. 900 is fine. When I'm towing heavy I NEVER over 900. If you plan on going more I hope that you have some money cause you will be needing it for a new turbo and maybe more. Its better to be safe than have to spend a few grand.

Mounted mine pre-turbo,drivers side exhaust manifold. That way you're monitoring egt directly outside exhaust port.

pre-turbo is irrelevant in this case. he's mounted his already and chances are he isn't going to change it. the max save temp is 900-950*, and i wouldnt go near 1000* for more than a few seconds.

I think 1100 is too high for a post turbo reading. I have probes in both locations, and can see a temperature difference as high as 400* sometimes. The worst part is the biggest temperature differences come at the higher temperature ranges. I've seen 1250-1300 on my pre turbo gauge, but the post turbo doesn't read much over 900. At lower temps, around 1000 pre turbo, the difference is usually only about 200-300. Also, the post turbo probe is not as responsive to the temperature changes as the pre turbo one is.

I'd keep it under 900 to be on the safe side. If it hit's 950 for long, you're asking for trouble. I know you've already got it mounted post turbo, but if you get the chance, I'd try to move it pre turbo. Drilling and tapping the driver's side manifold may sound a little scary, but it's not that tough to do.

I've reviewed many of the posts describing "safe" egt's for post turbo pyros. They seem overly conservative for me...

Pulling my trailer (6500lbs) with a stock 02 7.3, I consistently get egts in the 950 range for prolonged periods on small inclines. Steeper hills I could easily push it upwards of 1000 without trying.

Seems to me that if my egts return 950 with a stock truck, then getting upwards of 1050 may be normal?!?!?
