i recently rebuilt the 302 in my '72 F-100. it already had a h/v oil pump and i decided not to change it. now i'm starting to hear that it's better to use a stock pump. i'm running about 85 psi at cruising speeds. is that too much and, if so, what can i do about it. i heard you can add an xtra quart of oil in the crankcase. would appreciate any info.........thanx
gray, 85 is a lot, but I don't think you are going to hurt anything. You don't have bearing erosion problems until you are consistantly over 100. I would leave the HV pump in there. FWIW, the shop where I work puts an HV in every engine we build. DF
The 302's distributor gear in my Bronco was almost as bad as that one pictured after about 3,000 miles of using a HV pump. I get about 90 PSI at startup and 70 PSI at warmed-up crusing speed. Compared to the FE's, a Small Block's gear is much smaller and may be the reason they don't hold up to bigger pumps as well.
I have about 3,000 miles on a new distributor now but still have the same HV pump. I should probably check it soon to see how it is holding up before I am forced to walk home some day.
Guys, a 25-30% increase in pump volume is not going to eat dizzy gears. The problem was caused and is still being caused, (in small blocks anyways), by the teeth being ground incorrectly on the camshaft. I don't know who Comp buys their blanks from, but i have seen dozens of Comp cams in small block fords which are eating dizzy gears. Other brands of cams don't seem to have this problem DF
Hmmmm, I'd wondered about that. It never made sense to be that the @30% pressure increase would harm the dist. gear but I'd never heard an alternative reason. Its not the first time I've heard bad things about comp cams. Anways, the high volume (not high pressure!) is the way to go in an FE.
hey dino, that sounds more like it. i've put about 5500 miles on my 302 since the rebuild. i didn't replace the distributor and i haven't seen any sign of wear (btw, i used an edelbrock cam )i feel a little reassured about the oil pump now thanx
