Im going to be changing my oil pan gasket soon and since the pan is coming off im going to change the oil pump. The engine has 215,000km on it. Oil pressure is 50psi cold / 20psi hot. The engine does make a loud knocking noise in the valve train upon start up but goes away after a minute. Should I put a HV oil pump back in or just a normal one?
I'd stick with a standard pump unless you're planning on changing the valve cover and rocker cover gaskets too. The HV pumps can cause extra oil to pool in the upper and middle valve train making existing leaks worse. The retaining "lip" on the head is quite shallow, and the rocker chamber had no oil retaining lip at all.
If you're up for a full gasket change just take your pick. The stock pump is fine but for a higher mile engine a HV pump "may" help your pressure a bit.
Yea, I'd stick with a standard pressure and volume. I used a melling oil pump M74 when I replaced the oil pan on my 95 F150. That was five years ago. The factory one was made out of aluminum where as the melling was cast iron. I just figured while I had it all apart I would replace it.
I recomend also use plasticgauge to check bearing wear and replace Main and Rod Bearing also. This + new pump will restore almost 95% of oil pressure and lubrication system performance.
I preffer the stock pump, is light weight. If you use good oil filters never will have any problem.
By the way, the noise after startup could be Lifter noise. Using stock oil filter will reduce noise BUT wear inside lifter will still pressent
