Sounds like you need a simple tow tune with low egt's and increased mpg's: Quadzilla XZT (65HP). It cost's less than $299, and can be easily removed from the truck when you need to take it in for service.
You won't believe what only 65HP does to our 6.0's. Makes it perform like a whole new engine.
You are correct, the quadzilla is a little cheaper. We have sold a few of them, and havent had a problem with one yet. I was just thinking that a programmer would be the easiest to remove.
Hypermax is a company, and is not the same as hypertech. It is actually hypermax enginering out of gilberts ill. They only mess with navistar diesels only.
I think that the SCT is the most popular, but does anyone have any opinions on the Hypertech PP III? I have an 05 Powerstoke that I would like to get a little more power, and better milage.
With the PP III, or the SCMT, do you need an EGT gauge?
Not to start a pissing contest with everyone who thinks the tuner/programmer they have is the best but in everyones honest opinion which one gives the best MPG increase, with a little power, ease of removal, and won't eat up the tranny!! Not too much to ask! Basically...which is the best bang for the buck. I have yet to purchase one for my '06 6.0 F250 CC but am getting ready to. I was sold on EDGE A2...but have since backed off due to tranny issues. Am now leaning between Banks with PDA or the SCT with whatever. Bully Dog is the silent horse is this race though. Have read a bunch on each of them but not enough to sell me just yet!
TS has 3-4 MPG gains, and some of the lowest EGT's on the market. I talked to TS last night about the family of new products, the way it goes is like this...If you could pull the load with the stock truck and not over EGT the thing, you can pull the same load better with the TS PowerPlay MP-8 and also not over EGT it. You will not have tranny slip issues, and your empty MPG increase is expected to be 3-4 MPG. If you need any more info give me a call or email, I can help you out for sure.

new here like several others on this thread
what/who is TS
TS is also a younger company and they do not have total market saturation with thier name, alot like another company called Pacific Performance. Both of these companies have top notch products, but both are much less well known to the general public than like....Superchips or Banks....or some of the other that you see plastered throughout any magazine you pick up at the local news stand. If you check out Pac Perf you see that they have some very hot tunes as well, they seem to favor the GM side of the world a bit, but they have a decent showing for both Ford and Dodge with good numbers from all. TS does not really concentrate on the extreme numbers from thier mainstream products, but seem to look at making the best power that can be utilized and worked hard, without creating unsafe temps and fried trannys. Take a moment and check them out, there may some products that some of the new-to-diesel guys are not so familiar with that would fit thier requirements quite well. Dont be afraid to fire me an email or a phone call, I will try to help you out all I can while you wade through a literal ocean of tuners....
fordtrkpuller... Have you run PPE on a 6.0? Don't know anyone that has tried it do to the cost? I have heard good things about their products for other brands though.
I have not personally run it but I have sold 2 in the last month to 6.0 guys. Pacific performance has a very good rep in circles where it is known, I have absolutely no fear in suggesting anything of thiers. If it were not good, they would not sale it. The 2 folks I sold the PPE tuners to were very happy, and both were moving from "brand x" to PPE because some issue they where having. I tell you this, you buy one, try it for 2 weeks...if you dont like it I will take it back....They are that good, I will break my own policy and allow you to beta test for this particular forum where PPE is lees known, and you have no risk...you dont like...and I'll return it. If you like it, you tell fokks here about it. Simple.
I've got over 10K on both a Superchips 1704 and a Flashpaq (same truck - '05 Excursion), and have had zero problems. Power increase (I run "performance" tune all the time) is amazing and mileage is better than stock (when I stay out of the throttle). I upgraded to the Flashpaq (although the tune is almost identical to the 1704) because I'm looking forward to using some of the "soon to be available" upgraded features, like on the fly performance monitoring, etc, as well as internet upgradeability.
I based my decision mainly on reports that other tuners were not as "polished" in terms of their balance of performance vs. driveability. So far I have not been disappointed.
By the way, Superchips and SCT are different companies with similar but different products, so if you are interested make sure you're looking at the company and products you think you are. superchips.com for the 1704 or Flashpaq.
Martini, to answer your question, the SCMT is setup so that you could live without the extra gauges (if you use it as they suggest), BUT it's always better to know what's going on in your motor. My Excursion doesn't have an EGT gauge installed yet (I've actually had it (X-Monitor) sitting in my basement since last fall) but it'll be going in very soon...
