I have a 04 Lariat 4x4 Supercab with the 5.4 and want some opinions on the Flowmaster 40 and 50 series muffler.Which has the deeper tone and sounds the best. Thanks for your opinions.
I have 04 5.4 I have true duals with 40 series and sounds good it was not loud enough for me so I put 3/1/2 inch ss tips to help magnify the sound it sounds great now. I would go with the 40 series the 50 series would be to quiet hope this helps.
Are you just installing a muffler, or are you considering a cat back? I installed a FlowMaster cat back side exit. (3" single pipe) It came with a "50" and it sounds great. $270 bucks from Summit. You hear it at startup and at an idle, but it doesn't resonate in the cab. You hear it when accelerating, and also at freeway cruising, but just barely.
I'm almost 65 and I still like the sound of a good set of "pipes"...just like back in the good old days!
Oldtimer,
I am going with the cat back system. Thanks for the input.
DASTUD,
I am going to run the pipes straight out the back. I have read the magnaflow systems have problems at the hitch and the tire mount. Any truth to that ?
Thanks.
Well from working with my dad at our auto repair shop and being we install custom exhaust, my dads been bending custom exhaust for like 30 years. I can say after installing many different kinds of mufflers and magnaflows and flowmasters i defintly like the flow master sound better, but thats just opinion. As far as there whole systems, ive never been very impressed with pre bent systems, we usualy have customers come in to get them installed because of problems getting them to fit.
Sorry, can't help you with the one Flowmaster opinon.
I have a 4.6, with true duals and 2 Flowmaster 40's. 3 1/2 x 12 chrome tips coming out behind rear wheels. Sounds way good at start up and when I get on it, but rather quiet on the hiway. I'm thinking I read almost this same description up a few replies.
Keith, my FX4 has a "one Flowmaster catback"...the cats are mounted to the header pipes just below the exhaust manifold. There is no reasom to have to remove them on a single muffler setup. The two header pipes (2-1/2") merge into one 2-1/2 pipe at the transmission crossmember. The stock tailpipe clamps to the merged header pipes. The 3' Flowmaster kit necks down and fits the stock setup at that point.
Thanks for the input . Hey OLDTIMER is it possible to give me the model number that ya got and was the set up easy , sounds like it was .Im sure this is what I want too get ,single muffler and two tail pipes . THANKS

FLO-17403 FlowMaster Force II...$272.95 from SummitRacing.com.
This is a SINGLE TAILPIPE exhaust system. It mimics the factory setup. It is an easy setup to install. The hardest part is installing the tailpipe. Its hard to slip the rubber hangers on two brackets at the same time by yourself. Just move one out of the way until the other is in place...then slip the other one on
If you want twin pipes, the part # is FLO 17417 $369.88 American Thunder. This setup is louder...it uses a "40". This setup also uses a single muffler, but with a 3" inlet and two 2-1/2 exits for duals.

there is truth to that. if you are going with the dual out the back, go with the flowmaster.
