As I continue collecting parts for my 300 build up, whats good to use to prime the oil system on a new 300? I know the drive shaft is 5/16. Can I just use a long 5/16 rod to spin the oil pump or do I have to buy an oil pump primer tool? Thanks
I built my I6 in my garage this year, my first motor build. A buddy made a pump primer tool from round bar stock. He heated it, took a hammer to it and ground it to look like a screwdriver blade. Not what I had in mind, but you don't look a gifted horse in the mouth. It did fit snug. I put a drill motor on it and let it spin. I started to get the ****** because I had a vision of this make shift tool making small shaving in my motor. I pulled all the spark plugs, put the dist. in, and cranked the motor over with the starter after that. I have heard of others using a old dist. shaft. That is what I would do if I have to do it again. That reminds me. I have a old dist. now that I went to a dist. with vacuum advance.
Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like anything that will spin the oil pump will work. I just didn't want to have to buy something if I can make something. One more question. When your spinning it which way does it go, clockwise or counter clockwise? Thanks
Cranking it with an old hand brace they used to use with auger bits will work too. You can crank it at different speeds and watch the oil ooze all over th rockers. Cheap entertainment.
Yes old way is the best but this not same since there is no power production at pistons, no torque no nothing just bearing surface floating over film of oil used prior to assembly parts.
