I was wondering if I can run 2.02 valves in my 351? I know stock it wont work...but the new motor is bored .060 over with big valve reliefs so im not sure. I want to run AFR 185's....
The problem with running valves that large in stock heads is that the valves are so close together that they touch, so 1.94/1.60 is pretty much the limit for stockers. The AFR 185s are designed to use 2.02/1.60 valve combo, so you should be good to go there. Be sure to check piston-to-valve clearance with whichever cam you'll be running.
Yea i was reading that with 2.02's you have to put a little notch in each piston .100'' deep. I know I have some nice size valve reliefes but wasnt sure if they were in the right place.
They should be in essentially the right place for anything but Twisted Wedge heads, they bigger question is if they are large enough diameter. You need to put one rod/piston in the motor and set the head in place with a used gasket of the same thickness you'll be running and clay the piston to check piston-to-valve clearance and valve relief size/location. Better than finding out after the short block is assembled and having to tear it all apart again to cut the valve reliefs larger.
