im looking at a set of canfield casted heads
195cc runners
60cc chambers
2.02 1.60 valves
my ? is i dont know much about this set of heads are they any good and is it a bad idea to buy used alum heads? i know the specs are ok its the manufacter that i ? is it holley made?
they came off a 302 what size is better ? i want them to work for my plans of a 174 blower but also get better power out of my 302 now. what would be the downfall?
Heads that big will push the whole powerband up several thousand rpm on a naturally aspirated motor. Basically it won't make any usefull power below 3000rpm and you'll have to spin it to 7000 or 8000rpm to get into the meat... great for drag racing but lousy on the street.
165cc intake runner is more appropriate for a smaller engine.
with the big canfeilds you would loose some bottom end grunt due to the slow moving intake charge.
a huffer kinda equals the playing field and big heads are a nice combo with forced induction
with 2.02 valves in a small ford you may need to fly cut the pistons for clearance with anything over a stock cam(there may be room but i wouldn't risk it
if i get 165cc heads will the work well w/ forced induction or will i be recommended to get bigger heads? and conanski i talked to you about hp and tq numbers and how much would i gain even if they are to big for n/a
Is this for your Mustang? A street hottie type? No worries then. They're not ideal but if the price is right they'll scream. That goes double if you're planning on a blower.
yeah its for the mustang and it will be on the street almost all its life, but i will have a 498 lift cam and a 2500 converter so im thinking mid to high (6k) rpm. i just dont want to have to buy another set in a few years and im working on the price. what is a fair price for used heads (perf)
mine is a 71 block but remaned and 40 over it still has factory grade pistons. when i pulled the motor it only had 18k on it so i did not want to mess w/ the bottom end. i felt that the cam im running is about as high as i want w/ auto trans but its not crazy big by anymeans how small of cams have trouble? i know my pistons are flat and have 4 valve relifes in them
you should buy the heads place a slice of bread or playdough on the piston bolt the heads on with no gasket and rotate the engine a few times you need some clerence there but the head gasket will make a few tho room so i would go with the heads there a good deal and fit into your future plans.
let a few others chime in before you pull the trigger im just one opinion you should get a few more and weigh the options.
you will aslo need some conversion washers or head bolts as all small ford aftermarket heads have the 351 head bolt size 5/16 i think compared to 1/2 on the 302
