My Hurst should be here in a couple of days. What should I expect from it, both in terms of install difficulty and performance? Any special problem areas to look at? Any noted errors in the directions they send? Thanks.
Pilot, all that I've heard about them, is they are the bomb. I put the fx4 level2 shifter in my truck, so I can't speak from experience, but I've read alot of post on the hurst shifter on various sites. The feed back as all been positive. The only concern, was making sure your stops are ajusted correctly, and they rattle alittle, but they say performance is awesome, really shortens up the throws, and looks great, I saw posted pitures. Did you get those comp cam part numbers I got for you? If not, I still have them. Talk at you later, and good luck with your shifter!
PART# 49-410-8 OEM REPLACEMENT- GOOD TORQUE, AND MPG
PART# 49-422-8 NEEDS CHIP, STRONG TORQUE, AND MIDRANGE
Comp cams list both cams for 363.67, but I'm sure you can get them cheaper from a wholeseller such as summit racing, or jegs, I mean 363.67 a piece, not both for that price, 422 seems to be the hotter one.
RP, you have a 94 correct? You may know by now that the trucks with speedo cables will vent fluid from anywhere possible because the Hurst has no vent built into it like the factory shifter does.
You have to tap somewhere or you eventually get a mess.
Hurst is mum on the subject as far as they concern themselves--which is not at all.
Let your tranny plugs that are leaking be the vent.
No, seriously, don't do that.
I think you have to tap towards the lower end of the shifter. Somewhere.
I think the factory piece is tapped on the shifter tower somewhere on the lower end. The rubber boot is an issue as well...you'll probably have to copy the vent in the shifter tower in all likelihood.
If you just had a 95, you'd not have this issue. Oh well.
One question I forgot to ask earlier. I can still use the cupholders that came with the truck, right? The little plastic set of two that surrounds the shifter in the older models?
My mom had one in her 'vette, my dad had one wayyyy back when in his Mustang. Somebody let them know that they made one for the Ranger, so they picked one up for my birthday.
It's not a sports car, but I'll enjoy it in my truck I guess, if not only the looks, I also hear it makes a definitive "click" when you shift gears.
I can understand you wanting a hurst, they look good, shorter, crisp shifts, and your old shifter was probbly getting warn out. I remember back in the 70's, every young mans dream was to have a hurst shifter for thier car, we just knew in our heads, that with that new hurst, our cars would be a second faster in the quarter, those were the days! I am glad hurst is still around, thier an american icon.
Yeah that's what my dad said. When he was in high school it was a big thing to have a Hurst. Everyone thought they were awesome. Nowadays, most people wouldn't know what one was if you walked up and asked. Sad...
