I called around, naturally NOBODY has it for the Ranger. I went to Hurst's website and looked up dealers and called around...one of the guys said "I don't stock Hurst shifters..." and another said "well I have it for basically all the other Fords." Great...thanks...
So tell me this then guys. 3.08s to 4.10s...what kinda power, acceleration, mileage, feel differences can I expect? I imagine suddenly first gear goes kinda quick... What RPM will I be running in 5th at 60 MPH?
And last but not least, do you guys suggest getting new gears or just getting used ones from a boneyard?
here is an rpm calculator, http://www.woodyg.com/fairlane/finfo/rpm.html , i had 4.56 with 33's and it was perfect 3,000 rpm at about 70mph all depends on the tire your going to run. So if your going to lift it but going to get the gears first take that into consitoration no reason to do it twice...... never posted a link before so if it doesnt work tell me how to.
O and in town milage will go up and freeway may go down just a bit but when you come up to a hill you wont need to floor it to get over and then you wqill save again... so mialage will be up a bit all over dependiong on driving style. you will almost be able to let the clutch out without touching the gas so your clutch will last longer, less load on tranny, no more lugging the engine. And you will be able to do some nasty burnouts! if you plan on offroading i would look into a posi/locker/limited slip/thorsen something because now is the time to install it. and you have a .80 or .79 overdrive so that will be your high gear ratio..
I don't intend to do any offroading, just for looks. I was thinking maybe a lift, swith to 31s or 33s, higher gearing. What all would I need for a lift and all that? And how much do you think it would run? Thanks.
Zach, rough country has a 4" lift that will allow you to run up to a 33' tire, for 430.00. Day star has a 2" leveling kit for 96.00, that will allow you up to a 31" tire. You can find both kits at www.rockymountainsusp.com. You could go to the boneyard, and get the whole rearend out of a ranger, or explorer, the explorer rear should have 31 spline axles, and rear disc brakes, not a bad upgrade. You don't have to have the beef of an explorer rear, since you won't be offroading, but rear dics would be nice, and if you can get one, why not. Either way, I would try to find one with a posi, it will come in handy with 410 gears for traction, even on the street. Summit racing is a good place to order parts right here in Akron Ohio, the price's are good, and they ship fast, another good place is 4 WHEEL PARTS, they have a store in Dallas. phone # (214)672-1760. They may have your shifter in stock, since they deal only in offroad trucks. I hope some of this information is helpful.
mine cost me 1,000 2inch leveling coils, allignment, tires, rebuilt rear end with 456's and used posi, front fiberglass. i fit 33's with only little rubbing when offroading and it was fast and could still cruise 75mph. the one thing i didnt do was a drop pitman arm whitch i suggest, but you can run a 2 inch lift and still allignment it correctly
Thanks for the suggestions guys, something I'll definetly start lookin' into. This summer, I'm working and saving every dollar for the truck...to invest it all at the end of course! lol.

Be careful Zach, it sounds like you are falling into a trap a lot of young people do!!
Bob, your back! I hope you ,and your wife had agood trip, probley depressing comming back to the east coast after fun in the sun, I missed ya buddy! I wouldn't worry too much about Zack, most kids his age, including myself at his age, day dream more than they actually ever buy, day dreaming is more fun anyway, nothing ever goes wrong, and it cost less.
Well this summer I know I have to get a new transmission...or at least have this one rebuilt, as it's never been done, the synchros are worn out, etc. Usual stuff.
That's an excuse to get a new slave, clutch, and throwout bearing of course.
Once I'm done with that...I'll look into other things. Priorities first.

well, i got my hurst shifter on order today, with the bigger boot the bill comes to 250+ with shipping. hope to have it by the weekend. went ahead and ordered it through jeg's. hope i like it as well as i think i will, when i took my stock shifter apart to check out the nylon bushings, i found none, just a metal shim and a couple of thin steel wave washers. sloppy side to side play. was going to use the stock boot, but why cover up the shiny chrome im paying so much for. hope you get yours soon R.P.
Still waiting. I 'bout freaked out yesterday, sat down to check my email and there was a UPS notification of delivery to my house. I ran outside...but alas it was just my new ribbon rack for ROTC, 23 go me! lol. My heart dropped when I saw the little box.
