Stud Size?

I am needing help finding out the stud size of the studs which are used to bolt the eshaust manifold to the downpipe on the exhaust system. This is on the 300 L6 EFI 1987 engine. I talked to the Ford part's department and they said it would cost 11 bucks per stud and 9 bucks per nut. WOW, that is rediculous. I thought about just using standard bolts instead instead of studs, anybody have any opinions or help? Thanks

Did you check the local parts stores? They usually have a selection of studs. Sometimes you can look in the help! section and find them.

I would be better to use studs because:

The bolts will have a tendency to rust and get stuck in the manifold. So it will be difficult to get the exhaust off later on. A nut is usually easier to get off.

The threads in the cast iron manifold are easy to strip. So a stud works better since you do not disturb the threads when taking the exhaust off. They would be easy to cross thread while you are trying to hold the pipe up, and get one started.

to clarify, the help section is just that...the H.E.L.P. section. I got mine there for the walker downpipe-to-efi manifolds. Dealerships always charge more.

Bought a Falcon years ago dirt cheap because the owner stripped the threads off the exhaust manifold studs. The problem was the new exhaust pipe stuck too far past the flange. A ham fist could not make a good seal, stripped the stud threads and put the cars worth over the edge for him. The studs were rusted inplace and he could not get the studs out. I bought it, pulled the motor part way out untill I could get a small pipe wrench around the studs, and held my breath. I did use some penatrating oil. Luck was on my side and the studs came out. I always treat the exhaust studs with respect from that leason learned.

Take the extra step and clean out the stud holes with a thread tap. Take your time, start the tap with your fingers so you don't cross thread. Clean the holes out with air and or wd or brake cleaner. I use anti-seize lubricant on the stud threads. Retighten the nuts after you burn a tank of gas.

Just did this on my dads 1992 F150. We used 2 1/2 inch long studs. The size was 7/16 14. Cost 8 bucks for 4 new studs and 4 nuts. Should be able to get them at any local hardware store. They are regular automotive studs.

I found NAPA had the studs and nuts and all 8 pcs for $6.00. Ford could not get them for me! even tried to match them with ford stock!
