Putting a 302 in a truck to replace a 300 is going backward. Torque makes a truck motor, and the 300 has it. The 302 will downshift far more often when hauling a load and that isn't desirable in a truck used for work.
Add some breathing mods while retaining the low speed torque and you'll have a vastly superior motor to a 302. Try headers, a Holley 390 and a DP intake and you'll be quite pleased with the results.

The motor would still be breathing through a one barrel straw. My truck, when stock with the one barrel, would do 82 mph on a flat road, top speed. This with 31 inch tires and 3.55 gears.
Same truck, same gears, can be going 82 mph UPHILL and still have good reserve acceleration after modifications. Top speed is at least 15 mph faster (my speedo isn't accurate past 85).
The carb, intake and exhaust are all restrictive. If you don't replace them all you won't see much improvement. Air's gotta get both in and out.
If you want even more horsepower and don't mind the loss of some low speed torque then headwork and a cam are needed.
You've to make the 300c.i.er BREATHE 1st & Foremost, if you do not, you accomplish Nothing but Flushing the Rhino you've just invested.
You'll need to find an Offenhauser D/P Intake, then fit a 390-500 CFM Holley Carb. & then a 2-into-2 Header that suits you, such as a Hooker, Hedman, Borla, etc., then 2 1/2"-3" Exhauste Pipes (my preference is 8' of pipe that goes clear back to the rear bumper) into Magnaflows for best results from just Bolt-on Performance Parts.

Definately don't put a 302 in there. I don't want to harp on anything anyone else has told you but they do not make a good truck engine. I've had one in an 82 F-150 swb and that thing was a dog. Well, when used for actually work it was anyway. It'd tear up the blacktop anytime i wanted...but it was absolutely worthless when it came to towing, hauling or anything else.
I'm going to be building up and replacing the engine in my rig in a few months, so it looks like we get to learn together eh?

thats what it sounds like...i think what im gonna actually do first is to invest a the holley 0-8007 carb and then go for some exhaust...
