Have a buddy that swears the f150 302 will pretty much destroy a f150 300i6 in pulling Applications, I don't believe it at all, I always felt that the 300 was a stronger puller, what you guys think?
it's just depends on how you look at it, the 300 will do at 2,000 rpm's what the 302 has to do at 3,500-4,000, comparing stockish type engines of the same year, I also could be talking out of my ***, this is just my experience from having both
Your buddy is high on crack cocaine the 300 has low end torque that the 302 can only dream about
I wouldn't go as far as saying the 300 has low end torque the 302 can only dream of. If you look at the specifications provided from Ford, the 302 makes more peak torque at only 1k RPM more then the 300. People tend to exaggerate the difference. Sure, from a dead stop you will notice the difference, especially with a manual with a tall first gear. Once you get moving the 302 WILL perform better then the 300, loaded or not.
Having owned AND towed with both power plants, the difference in torque off idle is noticeable. Would I say the 300 absolutely demolishes the 302 down low? No, but for strictly stop and go traffic or city driving the 300 is more appealing, but not by as much as some would have you believe.
Yes a 302 with a little more gearing will out pull an I6, it makes more Hp and more peak torque too so in a drag race the V8 wins every time, but if your yardstick is pulling the farthest without changing gears then no.. the I6 with it's massive flywheel is the better tractor.
302 has a 4" bore 3" stroke, higher hp, higher tq, at the cost of higher rpm's ..... 300-i6 has 4" bore 3.98" stroke, just to put it in perspective same stroke as a 428 FE, same bore as 302-351w-352 FE just minus 2 cylinders so yes you are looking at a torquier low end ..... both have equal and opposite merits each way..... opinions are about like a but holes we all have one and it usually stinks to other people but hey its ours right? love and loathe both engines but gotta kind of go with the 302 in my preference.....now if only they made a straight 8 based off of 300-i6 could you imagine a 400-i8 for pulling? granted it would be a foot longer than a 300-i6 but man it could put down some awesome numbers......
I have towed with both too. They both get the job done. In stock form neither have an issues getting the load moving ( with a grany low 4spd ) . With a heavy load both slow on inclines on the highway. I wouldn't want to tow with either of them with an automatic. But I hate automatics. If you need an automatic then look into a 351W or a 460.
I had a 87 F250 2wd with a 302/NP435 and 3.73 gears. I towed/hauled with it for over 5 years. The 300 has a nice flat torque curve. The 302's is more peaky. To do the same job as the 300 the 302 needs more gearing to keep it wound up. Before the 87 F250, one of the trucks I had was a 86 F150 with 300/NP435 4spd and 3.08 gears. It performed nearly the same if not a little better then the 87 F250 except for the brakes and rear springs.
Now all of that is comparing stock vs. stock. With some simple mods the 300 will easily out pull the 302 ( even on the top end ) . Or to make things fair how about we swap on the 1V carb from the 300 onto the 302 and see how they do. Then we can see how well the 302 keeps that load moving.
For me the 300 is a better truck engine. It's tougher, has fewer parts to fail and will do anything you ever want it to.
i have seen some super impressive 300's out there ..... cousin had a super built 4bbl 300 that would wrap like a small block and outrun chebby 350's every day in a 69 f250.... i know of a couple built for the world of drag racing that used 351c heads minus 1 cylinder on each head that were turbo'd....that is just insane but if they have enough money right?
From fords own flyer for the trucks. The 300 doesnt make more torque
what annoys me is the scroll to the bottom of one thread in the mobile app and it jumps to a related thread before you can hit reply. Then you reply to a decade old thread and cant delete it, so here I am looking like a ******* posting efi specs in the wrong forum lol
I changed from a stock 390 2v to a 300 with larger valves, ported head, headers, msd ignition, small isky cam, and a 4v intake with an 750 quadrajet carb. I gained power and 50% better mpg. (With the addition of a zf5 I have doubled the mpg of the 390.) I also love having so much room in the engine compartment. I only gripe is the lack of performance parts for the 300, having to use 351 pistons, chevy valves, chevy rings, rods from 1967 ... etc. And the cost of the parts is usually double that of the same part for a sbc.
