that would depend on the shape of the 302, and what you are wanting to do with the truck. if ou jut want to be able to drive it around town, not really ever hauling anything or "playing", then rebuil the 300 if te 302 is blown. the 300's are great motors as far as dependability goes. but be warned; WHEN THEY GO, THEY GO! lol the 300's dont do anything halfway, either way, enjoy your truck.

It has the 302 in it presantly . I was told it has a thrown rod but the block doesn't have any holes in it but the it has coolant in the oil pan . I overly just need a truck to pull a trailer and haul fire wood . I need to tear into the motor a little but I have access to both the 300 and 302 . I've just never had a 300/6 in anything .

To my understanding then does the 300/302/351 all have the same bell housings and motor mounts

pulling the heads for an initial check is simple, so i would start there. and just because there is no holes in the block doesnt neccasarily mean there isnt damage elsewhere. it may be something as simple as a blown head/gasket. which are both simple fixes. and yes they share the same bellhousings, and the 302/351w share the motor mounts, not sure about the 300 though.

the 300 is going to have different engine perches.
When you say you want to pull a trailer, how big is the trailer? The 300's are great motors and very strong. Lot's of low end torque.

The 300 is a better motor for hauling if both a re stock, the 302 is a little more fun. Depends what you you want to spend also. Look at what it'll cost you to swap vs. rebuilding the 302. That's where I would go with this one. Either way though if you're looking at rebuilding, the 302 can be built to tow as much as the 302 and still be fun to drive. The 300... nothing exciting happens when you step on it.

Id grab a junkyard 5.0 HO from a 87-95 Mustang or an Explorer 5.0. Swap in a decent cam, throw a carbed intake on it and drop it in. The engines I suggested are roller cam which are steel so you will have to change the distributor gear on your existing distributor.

LOL. Depends on what you want to truck to do. A 4bbl carb and headers will wake that 300 right up.

I suppose so, both motors are good, but I still believe the 302 to have more potential when it comes to dropping in aftermarket parts. Probably cheaper for 302 parts also but don't quote me on that, I've never built up a 300 so haven't compared.

In this case though, check every possibility and go with the cheapest option.

302 is clearly cheaper with more aftermarket available. It's rediculous to even compare a 300 to a 302 in those categorys. Thats like comparing a 350 Chevy to a GM inline 6 and asking which is cheaper and which has more aftermarket parts.

If you are just wanting a stock engine...

I would go with the 300 over the 302 everytime. Especially hauling and towing.

If wanting a V8 I would have the 390-FE or the 351W.

I don't care much for the 302 in stock pickup truck form.

My opinion...

Well the truck has a 302 now . But if I can still get the motor my neaghbor has one out of an f-150 . If its possible to just get the presant motor running I'd like to convert to fuel injection . We just happen to have a 300 in the garage but by the sounds of it it will be easyier to go with the 302/351 I'll have to see what I get into when I open her up .

Thanks for all the info it's very helpfull .

I don't know about the aftermarket world for the 300 but for the 302 there is catalog after catalog full of stuff for them. After you look through a couple then you will realize that there is even more catalogs with 302 stuff. Best soundin small block there is...well in my opinion anyway.
