I searched and found the cause and fix for the clunk, the slip yoke. I pulled it apart and regreased it and it went away. Now my ? is why it makes the clunk?
The splines had grease still on them and the teflon coating looks brand new. Why would this make noise? School me. 2001F250 with 39,000 miles on it.

Jim, A common problem for Ford Superdutys is a clunk when putting the truck in gear. The gurus at Ford-Diesel.com have found the problem to be a lack of grease in the rear driveshaft splines. Nut
Not only a problem with the Big trucks, my little 98' Ranger had a real bad case of the clunks. As a matter of fact, that's what made me discover this forum

ha..!!! that's how i got my wife to STOP talking about getting a MINIVAN..!!! i went to a dealership my buddy works at and told him we wanted to look at a USED minivan..!! on the sly, i told him to bring one that had NOT been reconed yet..!!!! YOU SHOULD HAVE SMELLED THAT THING..!!! LOL..!!! my wife will NEVER EVER EVER NOT IN A MILLION YEARS EVER SAY ANYTHING ABOUT GETTING A MINIVAN EVER AGAIN..!!!!!!
