Been experiencing the front axle clunking when coming to stop. In an effort to diagnose what is causing the problem can I remove the front Auto hubs temporarily and drive it to make sure those arent whats causing the clunking?
89 Bronco with auto hubs. All the noise is coming from the front drivers side when the truck comes to a stop. But it doesnt happen every stop. Sounds like a clunk noise. I removed both front hubs to try to narrow down the problem. I figure hubs, bearings, u joints or sticking caliper
Well Ive driven it all day without the hubs and it hasnt acted up at all. Ill run to the junk yard tomorrow and find a set of manual hubs to replace them. Should manual hubs from any D44 axle work regardless of make? Is there something I should know about switching from auto hubs to manual hubs that Im not aware of?
Dave helped Joe swap his over. Maybe he will chime in on the specifics. I cant keep track of it all...especially since I dont do it on a regular basis.
5 bolt auto hubs can be swapped over for manuals off almost any ford, chevy D44 for sure. Just make sure to pull the inner "c" clip and spacer off the outer shaft after you pull the autos off.
Well no luck at the junk yard for a set of hubs other than one yard wanting $50 a piece for a set, heck I can get new ones for $60 a piece so I passed. Ill just tear down the auto hubs i have and try to rebuild them if thats possible
Why not just ditch the autos that are prone to breakage and get you a set of Warn hubs and call it done? Yeah, you'll have to get out and lock them in manually, but you won't have to worry about the lock-unlock-relock deal they do when changing direction or putting too much of a torque load to them.
