Just got a 94 F150 XLT, 4x4, I-6 (pretty sure it's the I-6...how do I check this?), 5sp, long bed with about 114k miles on it. I'm sure I'll have tons of questions as time goes on, but for now will limit myself to asking what, if anything, should be changed or checked on to ensure a good long life. Right off the bat I know I want to replace the battery and get the oil changed, as well as have the oil pan looked at (that seems to be a running problem in these trucks from what I've read so far).
Are there any other known issues I should be aware of? Are certain parts fussy about being changed (ex, copper vs platinum plugs)? I'm not completely ignorant when it comes to mechanics, but would still consider myself a novice. One of my goals is to change that, hopefully with the help of the good folk in here .
Well, the I-6 would have all the plugs running down one side of the engine.
You should also check out the sticker on the driver door and look up the codes (engine, axle, etc) in your owners manual.
As far as I've learned (owner for 9 months), these trucks aren't generally too fussy. Keep the ATF and engine oil changed. The fuel tanks drive a few people nuts since the $200 pump assembly fails eventually, and the tanks rust out.
I have a 95, and it's been one of the best vehicles I've had. You'll spend a lot less on maintenance than newer vehicles. Common issues are: fuel pumps (more for cross fill issues in the dual tank models), Speedometer modules (needle bounces, stalls on takeoff) rubber plugs on the back of the 5 spd shifter leak - replace with metal cup type plugs. Otherwise, keep it serviced and enjoy! You'll never wear the engine out....
Thanks, folks! Have an appt to have it looked over and take care of some of your suggestions - oil, filters, and plug changes, general inspection with special attention to the key areas - oil pan and gas tanks/pumps. Will be keeping my fingers crossed there's no urgency for anything major.
I've also looked up the door codes and found out the axle is a Non-Limited Slip 3.55. I'm not sure exactly what this means, but am under the impression that LS is preferred? Peeked under the hood and saw that the engine is indeed the I-6, which I was very happy to have confirmed I'd much rather have it's durability over something speedier.
