Help - I Have '69 F-100 with 3 speed- previous owner moved shifter from tree to Hurst Indy on floor. I've been trying to get some help with shifter. I'm a total novice on shifters.
Now transmission is stuck in second and shifter just moves around not doing anything.
Help me get it back to shifting and to correctly adjust linkages, etc.
The throw is very long. Shift lever touches the seat in first. And has occasionally seemed to hang up in neutral but would engage after double clutching.
Your going to have to crawl underneath and make sure all the linkages are connected properly. Sounds like something has come undone or maybe the base has come loose from it's mounting.
I can certainly tell if something is completely unbolted and can fix that.
Have no idea on how shifters or linkages "should" look.
Any suggestions on adjustments?
Put a Hurst Indy shifter on a '69 I had a few years ago. I don't think it needed any adjusting...it just worked. It shouldn't be floppy and the movement required for gear changes wasn't excessive. If the seat is getting in the way of shifting to first or third you can adjust the 2 shifter rods to make them longer...this will rotate the gear lever forward.
Thanks Sedric,
I don't know how old this shifter is. At least now I know there are some good ones out there.
Ohio Bill gave me good instructions on getting to neutral and alignment. I will try you lengthing strategy when I get under the transmission for the first time this weekend. Printed off some diagrams from Hurst website so at least know what I am looking for.
