Hey I was thinking about running 20w-50 oil in my 1971 F-100 with a 360 in it. The engine has 59,000 miles on it. I have been running some old 10w-30 in it. My father passed away in 1999 and he always stocked up on oil. I think there's around 6 cases of castrol 20w-50 in his shop. The old truck is the only thing I think I might be able to use it in. Just wondering if it might mess something up internally.
I don't use old used oil in my engine! I just have a supply of amoco supreme 10w-30 from the 70's in my father's shop I've been trying to use up. It's in the old cardboard type cans with metal tops and bottoms. Some are starting to leak so I want to use this stuff up!
I wouldn't be running either oil. The oils of today are FAR superior to those old oils. There's a reason most people traded off after 100,000 miles, and this is a major contributing factor.
I'd find a good 10w30 or 15w40 diesel rated oil and run that. The diesel rating more closely matches the additive package of those ancient oils, which is what the engine was designed around. The new SM rated oils may be inadequate in that motor. Look for one with the dual SL / CI-4 rating.
i bought a gallon of Rotella T 15w40 for $7.50 at advance auto. I've heard that this is a great oil b/c it's diesel rated but why is it so cheap if it's so good?? penz runs like another $3 more a gallon. Is Rotella really a better oil?
If they are charging 3.00 more a gallon for pennzoil 15w40 then they are scamming you. Rotella T and Pennzoil are both part of SOPUS and since then the Pennzoil botles have been filled with Rotella T. The oils are no different.
