Just got my block back from the machine shop and the guy told me I had a 427 because of the numbers 66-427 tattooed on the back. Well, I was cleaning and oiling this weekend and noticed a 352 stamped on the front...in the upper left area. I was always under the assumption it was a 427 so never looked for any ID marks, plus its easier to see now that its clean Thanks in advance!
what is the bore on it? the 352 just means it is an FE. a 427 will have a bore of 4.23 a 428 will have a bore of 4.13 a 360/390 will have a bore of 4.05 and a 352 will have a bore of 4".
If your block has crossbolt mains and a 4.23 std or oversize bore it's a 427. That said the rear bulkhead of the sideoiler mold was used on lots of FE blocks. The "66-427" is present and you should see a "8" shaped boss unmachined on the lower left side. That's for the sideoilers oil pressure relief valve and the rear oil galley plug. Lots of blocks besides 427's were cast with that part of the mold for some reason. Ford used part of the same molds from the 427 lot that was cast before and changed the bulkhead sand cores for the cranksaddle possibly, two waterjacket sand cores and two cylinder sand cores to determine rough bore dimentions. These could be mixed and matched as suited. My guess the 427 bulhead molds were in place and all they had to do is change the inner core molds for smaller bore blocks to be cast. A time and money saver at the foundry. I've had a few 428 blocks with the 66-427 present and have seen it on other bore blocks besides. What's the finished bore of your block now?
The finished bore on the block is 4.069, which I was told by the gentleman I bought it from that it had been done .030 over...? So I'm guessing its a 352. Would I be able to squeeze a 428 crank in there? I know the 390 blocks and the 427's are the same, but dunno about 352's. =\ Thanks for the help!
427 blocks are different than the 360/390 block. you cant get a 4.23 bore out of a 390 block. the 352/360/390 are all the same block. some 360/390 blocks you can get a 428 bore out of which is 4.13 but those were later blocks. you can build yours as a 20 over 390 or you can put a 428 crank in there and make it a 20 over 410.
