My wife's 99 Ranger has only one key and one remote. I am going to get another key cut just so we can get in the door if the key gets locked in. This seems to happen too often.
A friend mentioned that if we buy the key blank from the dealer we can program the key ourselves somehow rather than paying the dealer to do it. Anyone heard of this before and if so where can I find the procedure?
Thanks..
My 04 required two valid keys in order to program a third. Instructions were in the owners manual. I bought the blank on ebay; better prices. Shop carefully for quality before buying.
Thanks Cowboy,
So I'll still have to get at least one through the dealer then if I understand correctly, and after that I might be able to make my own if the 99 is the same as the 04 right?
I used to have a used 99 that came with only 1 key. We payed a locksmith who hooked up a computer to program the second (a bit cheaper than dealer). Eventually I had a third chipped key cut and programmed that one myself. The program procedures are in the owner's manual. But you need at least 2 programmed keys to program additional ones.
Thanks Ledbetter,
I had assumed that only a dealer could program that second key for me. A locksmith lives down the road from me. I'll have to ask him about that. I did download the owner's manual and found the procedure. It seems easy enough. I was hoping to avoid the $$ at the dealership but it looks like that is just about imminent.
