Just got a E350 from a guy and no door lock keys were included. I emailed a dealer asking how to get keys made and he claims I HAVE to have the key code in order for him to make one. Do any of you guys know where I can locate the key code? Its a 1990 E350..

I always thought one just needed a title and some cash to get keys made at the dealer but I guess I was wrong. Thanks!

 

The only way a dealer is going to have the key code for that old a model is the original selling dealer may have the key code on the original paperwork for that van. When I was working in a dealership we were able to go back 10 - 20 years to find key codes.
Somewhere around yr 2000 Ford set up a dealer accessable database to retrieve key codes from vin number but only the parts or service manager in a dealership has access.

I found a number on the latch in the door that comes down on the body mounted post when you close the door to hold it shut. The number reads: y0d06

However its probably not correct since the number on the other doors latch is different..

 

On these you can simply go to a locksmith. It's not chipped, and the only downfall is the locksmith generally has to remove the cylinder to key it correctly.
The key code MAY be on the door sticker, as it is on some models. It would read like FG1307 or something like that

 

Unless something has changed since 1997, there are no key codes anywhere on the vehicle. Dealers used to write the codes in owners manuals, and when new, the key rings would come with little metal tags with the key code on them.

You have choices. the door keys can be coded to the ignition key by a lock shop, or you can buy a new keyed alike set from Ford.

 

If you re-read the first post, you will see this is a 1990.

 

I didn't need to re-read it. I answered your question, by stating that there were no lock codes anywhere on any Ford vehicle prior to 1997. That info covered your 1990 vehicle. Information inre to 1997 was for the benefit of others that may be seeking the same information for their vehicles, which might just be newer than 1990.

I retired in 1997, so I don't know if Ford has changed anything inre to locks since.

 

I beg to differ, but maybe there's something else at work in my situation. I had a local locksmith MAKE a new key for me, as the old one was catching due to wear. He got the number from the door tag. A good friend had his done on a '85 T-bird and he's the one who told me about being able to do it(his was in the truck by the weatherstrip). Maybe my local smithy knows a secret?
I'm not challenging your knowledge... just trying to reconcile here.

No way is there any visible key codes on door tags (VIN plates), otherwise there would be a lot more stolen cars! Ford could provide key codes off VIN's, but only to authorized dealers (not lock shops). Ford would ask the dealer for his parts code before key codes were given out, to further protect owners.

Your locksmith read your worn key..that is...the depth of the cuts. No code is needed. Parts guys can too...it is us who cuts keys in the dealerships. I prolly cut 20,000 keys in 35 years.

The cuts run from one to five, with one being the shallowest, and five the deepest. With the old five cut keys, new ones could be cut in seconds, but the ten cut keys require a code...a PITA, and using a key cutter, are cut from back to front, as opposed to the old five cut way of front to back. (edit: ignition keys, trunk keys are reverse)

Not a rant, not meaning to anger anyone...just don't ask me to cut a 10 cut key!

 

I have a 1988 Ford econoline van. I have ignition key but do not have door lock key. I do have the key code.
No one so far has been able to help as they are saying that if the auto is over 10 years old that the cut pattern no longer is accessible or exixts.

FB0194 is a valid key code for an '88 Ford and it's available. As a locksmith, I can cut it by code. Check with a locksmith in your area.

Before posting to this wonderfully impressive site, i made contact with 3 sources that I thought would be the best places to reach out to....nope!
1). Local Ford dealership.
2). Ford Universal (higher up than local dealership).
3). Local locksmith (been in business over 50 years).

None believed they could help and set their minds on that. Couldn't get any of them to inquire with their "higher-ups", nor give me a number to call.

I'm surprised a locksmith that's been in business that long couldn't help. Maybe they're not into automotive.
