The gas gauge on my bronc doesnt work, hasnt worked since i bought it. I recently took it to a friend of the family that owns a shop. He told me it was the sending unit in the tank and that it would cost around 400 bucks to fix. I dont understand this because the sending unit is only $40 in my LMC. Is he trying to screw me or is there some other cost that i dont realize? Also how difficult is this job, it looks to my like i pull the tank pop in the new sending unit and thats about it. thanks
I would agree, do it your self, but I would look at other possibilities for the problem before removing the tank. Just hang on and their will be some good advice in a while.
That is about it, IF your tank's nearly empty. If not, putting it back up IS a job. I replaced mine with 3/4's full and nothing to siphon it into. Boy that sucker was heavy. That was in 2000. My right shoulder still hurts.
What year did they stop putting the brass floats in the tanks.
When I dropped my tank (it was full by the way.) The brass float was coroded and had a hole in it, It was like 5 bucks from ford and it works like a top now.
You probably already know this BUT, if you do it yourself and your truck has the spin type lock ring make sure you use a brass punch to remove it. Lord knows you don't need any sparks.
The friend of the family might be quoting to replace everything in the tank while its down. Quite often the biggest expense with mechanical repairs (for the guy who takes his vehicle to a shop) is the +$70/hr labour rate. Ask the friend for a break down of the expenses - $X.xx labour, $X.xx parts. I agree with nv_brewer though, this is definitely a repair done when the tank is almost empty. I helped do one when a fuel pump died in an aerostar. They had just filled the tank and went to start it up and it wouldn't go. We changed it without removing any gas - at least until buddy got a shower! Then again it was his name on the work order!!
Ask him to check the price again and have your LMC catalog in hand when you do. He may be quoting you the price for the sending unit and fuel pump assembly as one.
