1983Ford E150 Van, 351 w/dual tanks.
I have been given a quote that it will cost me $125
for each sending unit (ie parts) That's $250 for both
sending units and $294 for labor to replace both units.
That's $544 to replace both sending units in my 2 gas tanks..
Does this sound like a ball park figure??? it's from a
Ford dealer...
Thanks..
I know that one sending unit for a 2000 chebbie Z71, its $500. And I would think that the dealer would have some sort of warentee on their work. Just make sure that the sending units are the problem.
I just looked in jcwhitney and they have an adjustable level sender. works in tanks 6-24" deep. bolts to top of tank, may need to mod the tank to install it? is the ford resistance 78-10 ohms for an 1984 truck? all for $17 plus shipping. anyone use it?
Your sender may not be bad. The brass floats in both of mine were cracked and the dealership socked me the 500+ to change them. 1 year later they both failed again. I took them out myself this time and this time a friend in the parts department sold me new floats for $3 a piece. I hate that dealerships service manager for ripping me off like this. I hope yours is as simple. Dropping the tanks was easy. I have a friend with a muffler shop and we just used his rack and some real tall stands and just raised the van up off the tanks. Did them both in about 45 minutes.
Scarl... That labor rate sounds kind of high. They should only have to charge about 2 hours......That's like...150.00/hr
My sister needed a pump in her ch%^y and they told her 950.00 to replace. When the dealer told me it cost 150.00 for the pump, I asked how much labor they were charging they said 1.5hrs. Itold them they had one h$%^l of a rate, They dropped their quote by about 400.00.
I just put one in my 80 F350. I changed the tank (about 100 bucks). The straps were shot (50.00). The sending unit from the dealer(85.00).New filler hose 2" from gas station supply house(20.00).Not running out of gas PRICELESS
The new service manager is the owners son in law and they are paying him $90,000 a year, so they had to raise the prices, short the mechanics and charge for full diagnostics on near every job whether they are done or not. That was how they got me $250 for one glow plug once. They won't change a fuse without testing every component of the circuit now to make sure that was really the problem. About the only work they get anymore is warranty work now.
