I put the Pertronix point replacer in my '72 302 about 6 months ago and finally got around to upgrading the coil to the Pertonix Flame Thrower. As per suggestion from this forum, I also openned my plug gap up to .044". What a difference...I noticed an immediate improvement in throttle response and low end snap. My idle has also smoothed out when stopped in drive.
I know this has been stated before by others but this is a worthwhile upgrade for older, point ignition vehicles. I wouldn't have known about it if not for this forum...thanks guys.
Sedric, Good news. Now consider the Ford flat cap, adapter, long nose rotor and some nice fat 8mm wires for a 351. The flat cap separates the lugs in the cap and eliminates crossfire. The snap on Ford connectors on OEM wires is also nice. I have over 23000 miles on this setup and not a problem. I also use autolite platinum plugs (forget what number), its been a while.

Thanks William. I figured I might have some trouble with my stock dist. cap and wires, so far they are OK but they might break down under the higher voltage...do you think? Where do you get the adaptor? Does a stock 351 cap fit on top of the adaptor?
Are those plugs you talk about the ones with 3 or 4 electrodes arranged around the central post?
Side gapping is a technique used by racers for many years. It entails filing off about 1/2 of the ground electrode. The idea is the spark will be much more accssible to the air/fuel mixture.
FYI, you can get the cap adapter and the large cap at any part store. Tell them you have a late 70's 302 and they'll point you in the right direction.
I've got a stock 352, 2bbl... trying to be more fuel efficient, and get better performance. Just picked up the Pertronix Ignitor with high voltage coil... considering the 7mm wires (stock look), are the 8mm's that much better?? Installing Splitfire plugs... will your suggestion for a cap and rotor hold up to the increased spark, and is it a good fit on the 352?
Open to suggestions, thanks!

I'm still running the stock cap and 7mm wires and haven't had any trouble so far. With the 302 you can go to a larger diameter later model cap but I'm not sure if such a thing is available for an FE. If you have to buy new wires anyways then maybe the 8mm would be the way to go otherwise I'd just try it with what you have.
The flat cap, adapter and fat Ford plug wires (7m or 8mm I forget)for a 351 fit like a glove. This setup fits Ford distributors back to the 50's. All Ford parts, plentiful in junk yards and cheap at NAPA. JEGs sells the cap and adapter as a set. Don't forget the long nose rotor. 25000 miles and no problems. I have a Mallory coil but if I was doing it over I'd go with the smaller Pertronix or stock. These fit better and don't require any special mounting brackets. This flat cap and adapter deal works with point ignitions as well. I'd take my running truck, install the cap and adapter and plug wires and start it up. Be sure everything is working properly, then install the Pertronix. This way you reduce the chances of wondering why it don't run right or at all and have some idea of where to look. It’s that old incremental change philosophy!

hi,
I agree about the pertrinox their Great. on the race car I have a flame thrower coil dual point accel dis. dual point pertrionx, 8.8 accel wires, fomoco plugs opened to around 55, man, will that thing throw a spark so I decided I would grab a hold of it too see how strong it was want do that again!
This is what Santa is bringing me to make the conversion to the flat cap for my Pertronix setup... these are the brass contacts on the cap and rotor, not aluminum:
Advance Auto (in store or online)
Blue Streak Cap and Rotor KCR-201X $17.49
GP Sorensen Adapter FR110 $7.49
Ford MotorSport 9mm Wires FMS-M12259C301 $39.95 at Summit Racing
Autolite Double Platinum Plus (tip and ground are platinum) APP45 $3.99 per.
Now all I have to do is fix all the oil leaks!
